Am i the only person in brighton who thinks this is a bad idea?

The city is grossly over-populated as it is with parking an absolute struggle on the best days and now they have announced that the Brighton i360 is a go. This means there is going to be an additional 300/500 thousand people coming here every year (according to predictions) on top of all the current tourists/students and there is going to be 109 jobs created out of it.

I can’t believe “everyone” is so accepting with this idea, so it’s going to increase the tourism and it’s going to create some more jobs but tbh they should just build a new bloody supermarket, that’ll create at least 100 new jobs and it won’t put pressure on the already over-crowded city.

I'm not entirely sure how to explain how i feel about this but i'm not impressed, i've only lived here for a year now but i've been in and out of brighton for the last 4 years and even i can see that the city is asking to much of itself with this new development.

they approve a giant stick, yet the bloody stadium has taken 9 years so far! :(

Hopefully another 9 years aswell :p They should build it over the rubbish tip.

I'm actually liking this idea, I don't really find the city too crowded, not as much as London for example.

This city needs some new ideas, it's not _that_ great right now.

why would that attract 500,000 extra visitors a year  , I think a few councillors are a little deluded here

The extra tourist influx will also benefit the other local businesses remember. Hotels, restaurants, taxis etc etc will see the positive points of another local attraction.

[font=Verdana,Arial,sans-serif]Too many of our basic services are running stretched to the limit and beyond to the detriment of locals without the addtion of more tourists.

The thing is, it's probably fair to say that much of Brighton's income and economy comes from tourism. Take that away and how many local businesses (and therefore local jobs and local people) would be screwed?

I'm not disagreeing with you on the point of local services being stretched by the way, i'm just pointing out that Brighton owes a lot to tourism. To not promote itself to encourage more tourists would create more problems for the locals in the long run.

AGreed, the Eiffel Tower attracts around 6 million visitors and the vast majority are there because of Paris as a whole. No disrespect to Brighton, but there is no way on this planet that thing has enough attraction to draw in half a million visitors per year. Perhaps they should build a huge white elephant because that's what this will become.

Looks like the local councillors have been at the crack pipe. ;)

Brighton gets a lot of visitors already, but I can't see it increasing cause of a giant stick. I mean look at the spinnaker tower in pompey :|

Yup.

Bloody stupid idea... looks ridiculous and probably won't be able to withstand anything... what a waste of money... I am embarrased.

I'm all for it :) Though might have to change my Username

As for the Stadium, planning permission has been granted. It's the Government and the Liberals from Lewes that are delaying the construction.

Miserable gits they are in Lewes :p

Looks alright, but I would say 100k max as far as tourism goes. The money would be better spent replacing the 1970s busses that are still being used! They are less than water proof -_-

I have done a little bit of research and was very surprised about tourist numbers. In my own city, Gloucester, there are always loads of tourists focusing mainly on the heritage thing, Romans/Docks/Cathedral etc. So I thought, what are the tourist figures for here and see if somwhere like Brighton, a bit bigger and certainly higher profile than good old Glaws, could get such numbers.

Well, it seems some tourist attractions do attract several hundred thousand visitors a year. I actually think, as can bee seen below, it is possible for such a thing to attract such large numbers.

It is still a big stick though.
:)

They should spend the money on the west pier tbh, i know the end bit is staying but they should revamp it to its former glory, its part of the heritage of the city and replacing it with a giant phallus is just pointless.
