My guess is the additional shape of the knee pad was able to get behind the release mechanism.
While I understand a steering wheel coming off is bad, the amount of energy that was required for it to happen kind of makes it less important, as if you have had an incident with that much energy, you are unlikely to be needing to use the wheel anyway.
If on the other hand, the wheel came off in an incident like Rosberg/Hamilton one last race, then that would be more concerning.
