Why did Mercedes not take the free pitstop.

It wasn't a free stop. If Hamilton had gone in and Verstappen stayed out, Verstappen would have track position. Verstappen had a free stop as soon as Bottas' tyre failed, as they had enough time to the car behind.

Ironically, because of Verstappen's stop, Hamilton had enough time to walk his crippled car to the finish line before Max could catch up to him.
