The Channel 4 coverage should just be the called the Christian Horner Show sponsored by Red Bull.

That guy loves the sound of his own voice. I think he sees it as the more the merrier with any Redbull coverage and likes to be in a position of being able to defend Redbull and speak first before any other teams.

I liked Max when he first came on the scene but I've grown to dislike him and the whole Redbull team really (although I like Perez). I'd absolutely love for max to have a couple of DNFs to make the championship interesting otherwise he will run away with it. The Redbull is still quicker if they fix the understeer imo.

Erm…wait, what the hell is this new qualifying all about?

FP1 as normal.

Qualifying - that really isn't qualifying. As soon as you leave the garage, you're in parc ferme - so no car changes allowed and the race gearboxes and engines are in. Only have 5 sets of soft tyres available for the entire of the non-quali. Person who is fastest isn't on pole position for the race. Gets teh Speed King mini tyre instead of the pole position mini tyre

FP2 - Now saturday morning. In parc ferme conditions with race engines and gearboxes... Imagine the amount of running that'll get done.

Sprint race Sprint qualifying Sprint event whatever they're calling it. 17 laps around Silverstone to set the race positions. Person who finishes first gets the official pole position even though they may not be the absolute fastest car.

Race - At least this is pretty normal... other than everyone having their choice of tyres to start as they all ran the softs throughout non-qualifying.

The greatest F1 theme ever. I love it, brings back so many memories.
The Chain was what the BBC used as for the F1 coverage. It was never an official F1 theme though, just what everyone in the UK associated with F1 due to the coverage always being on BBC before the new boys turned up. Channel 4 didn't even use it did they?

Brian Tyler composed the new official F1 theme for Liberty Media.
Does anyone even remember the old official F1 theme under Bernie?? Was there even one?

Awesome, thanks for the explanation.

oh I know full well it was the chain, but it always be the f1 theme for me.

Agree. I did smile that Lewis/Bottas and MB crew threw a spanner in the works for today after all the Red Bull hype. A small victory. I do hope Lewis triumphs Sunday but a tall order. I do think MB have been nobbled this year.

I like the C4 coverage but the Coulthard/Webber bias, drives me nuts.

Russell, what a display - probably one of the true raw talents to come through, Norris is driving brilliantly as is Hamilton.

It didn't have a whole theme, it didn't need one.

But they did have this sting and logo. Still a better logo. Not the great old F1 logo, but the FIA F1 logo was pretty good.

I think this "Sprint Race" concept has kind of worked because as a casual F1 viewer who normally only tunes in on Sundays it's got me interested in watching on a Saturday.

It will be intresting to see if the "qualifying" last night at 1800 got more watchers than a typical Silverstone qualifying on Saturday at ~1300.

Just a reminder for me and others, the 17 lap sprint race for grid positions tomorrow is at 1630 this afternoon.

The main race starts at 1500 tomorrow according to https://www.autosport.com/ ... That sounds later than normal.

They tried a different qualifying format many years ago which just didn't work. They quickly reverted it.

The current qualifying format was an innovation and it has worked spectacularly well. So it's worth trying things, even if they don't quite work out as expected. I, for one, being a long time avid F1 fan am quite hopeful about the sprint race today - the fact that the championship contenders will be cautious and the others not, means it should result in some good action over 17 laps, and if it mixes the grid up for the race, all the better. Let's see, though...

I agree they need to try to innovate. The die hard fans will watch practice sessions, but there is little interest otherwise. Qualifying equally with the lead drivers potentially doing only 4 laps at race pace can make the Saturday slightly dull as a spectacle (reliant on F2 or other races during the day to make it good value as a day out). I think if we really wanted to try something interesting then the two sprint races with reverse grid to decide the race start would be the best, but I worry the differential in speed between the cars would make it very chaotic on a start.

Sprint today and main race tomorrow are a very late start for a normal UK GP race weekend. Especially the sprint race today. Not that I'm complaining too much, I dislike races that start in the middle of the day, you feel like you've lost the whole day (especially if the race is like dishwater)

In theory, yeah. But as they're now in parc ferme it makes it a little tougher if they get damage. Damage a part on a kerb that's new and the only one you have? Can't replace like for like.... Back of the grid for you!

I thought on Sky yesterday Martin said if you got damage in the sprint event you didn't have to replace like for like?

Also, what's the point of FP2 now? Can't change anything so why bother with it.... They're all in race trim and spec now, so they're not going to want to add miles to their race engines and gearboxes. Congratulation F1... you've just made an entire 1 hour session completely worthless.

Also I thought he said they could change things for FP2, just that the settings had to go back as before for the sprint race.

I could have got that all wrong as it did seem very confusing...

Is there such a thing as a casual F1 viewer? I would imagine that it is too technical for that. I've met a fair few people into F1 and they all know their stuff. I've never met anyone who's take or leave, or that will only watch the odd race here and there. Interestingly, many of the F1 fans I've met have no interest in motorsport on the whole. It's just F1, or MotoGP.

So what's the point of putting them in parc ferme conditions then? Can't change anything, but you know.. you can...if you want to...
Why not just start parc ferme from the moment of leaving the garage for the the sprint event? You know, like they do at normal weekends with it kicking in at the start of qualifying.
