Ok so on a few other forums I goto some christians and bleeding heart liberals are on a crusade to get Akmal Shaikh spared the death penalty after he got caught smuggling 4kg of heroin into China.

Now I would have thought this story would have made it onto OcUK. His family claim he's mentaly ill because he suffers from bi-polar but how can suffering from depression make you want to take up drug trafficking in the far east I don't know. Are the chinese right to execute this guy?

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville said Mr Shaikh's relatives want to explain that he had "suffered from long term mental illness" and travelled to the China to pursue a "fantasy" belief in a possible career as a pop star.

"They believe he was not responsible for himself and certainly not responsible for drug trafficking," said our correspondent.

He's clearly not a very well man, with either severe bipolar disorder or some other serious problems. Execution does not seem a particularly sensible option.

It's not right that he's being put to death for smuggling drugs..but as stated above he did it in a place with the death penalty so he made his own bed, now he's gotta sleep in it...forever.

Or in other words

" quick, stick two pencils up your nose and put your pants on head. They will think you are insane and you will get off scot free"

So his family and defence team claim. But when faced with the death penalty I suppose they would say he's mentaly ill.

I can't see how drug smuggling justifies the death penalty by any stretch of reason, however the law in that country is clear, as is their attitude towards mental illness.

If he was that incapable of looking after his own interests, then why was his family not taking better care of him?

Execution for drug smuggling seems a bit harsh

but.. he should've known the risks & possible consequences of his actions if he was caught in China , bit of an idiot tbh
