I just did a search and can't believe there isn't a thread on this movie :confused:

Is it released over in the UK yet?

Anyway, saw it today and I have to say it was stunning. Absolutely brilliant performances from the two leads, as well as the supporting cast. Beautiful score, stunning cinematography. It has everything. Ang Lee is just a total genius as far as I'm concerned

I hope it cleans up at the oscars cos it deserves it.

Best movie I've seen in a while. 10/10

Yeah the missus has seen it and she thought it was great. She told me about it but all I heard was "Got beat up" and "Gays" as I was a bit busy. Probably quite good so I will have to see myself.

The cinematography was spectacular, it's very beautifully filmed. I agree with the soundtrack, my girlfriend want's the OST for the film.

I'm afraid i have to admit to being a tad homophobic at least as far as two blokes are concerned. My wife read the rave reviews and said she wanted to see it so i agreed not knowing what the film was about (stupidly i hadn't read the reviews for myself) and my wife didn't bother clueing me in. Needless to say once the first 'love' scence happened i was counting down the minutes until the film ended - couldn't get into it at all.

I must admit, there is nothing in the film that would make me rush out and watch it. I just have no inclination to actually watch a love story never mind one between homosexual men!

Well done to the Oscar voters for seeing past this film and going for one with a bit of substance about it (Crash).

I was a little shocked by the obviousness and actually almost brutal first love scene - but after a while I realised it wouldn't have worked had it been any other way. Just got too used to the soppy-mushiness of the usual Hollywood output.

I liked it - it was very sad, though.

i have not seen bareback mountain yet, but i have heard lots of good things about it, not sure if it's my cup of tea though!

Shame really, because you missed out on a great film with stunning cinematography, breathtaking scenery, an amazing soundtrack and some really great performances from all the main actors.

Soundtrack CD arrived in the post this morning :cool:

The signature track of the film (one used in the trailers) is almost haunting in its sombreness and poignancy, containing a great deal of sadness beneath the surface. Never fails to pull on my heart a little, every time I hear it.

It was a very good film, with some great acting performances as well, superb cinematography, but not as good as Crash, which deservedly won the best film oscar, in my humble opinion, or course.

Wasnt keen, nothing much seemed to happen. The thing that puzzles me the most is how heath ledger is nominated for an oscar when his range of facial expressions was limited to the "no emotion look."

Im sure most people can act without any emotion, not sure its oscar worthy.

Yeah, I found that comment pretty curious :confused:

Some people seem to have written it off as a love story, but it really deserves more than merely being called "a love story". The amount of pain, anguish and frustration set deep in their relationship is not a love story, at least not in the typical airhead Hollywood sense.

I found Heath Ledger's performance to be excellent. His role is to be the quiet, suffering alone type who rarely shows emotions, but you can see a huge amount of his frustration at the situation and his helplessness. Good acting is not just restricted to emotions that you can see at first glance.

I can see how some people might find the pace of the film too slow, if they were expecting a faster pace but I found it just right. It's not meant to be an action film and besides, it covers such a long period that any faster would have made it seem rushed.

I am, of course, just going on what people have said to me. Almost without exception they have said it is a vastly over-rated film.

I'm not saying this in a judgemental way at all (because we all do it) but when you have a particular view on a matter, you tend to listen more closely to opinions supporting that viewpoint and remember them better, than those against your viewpoint.

Moreover, at least personally I find that my social groups are predominantly comprised of people with similar tastes and opinions. That may also contribute to the skew of opinions you heard from people around you.

Does anyone know if this film is remake of something older? I seem to remember a South Park episode that joked about films about gay cowboys from several years back.
(That's the main reason I haven't yet seen it tbh: I thought the episode would come back to me and I'd start giggling in the cinema, in particular the line "Oh my God, I found a penny!" - "You *******!"

PS. About the "Gay Cowboy" theme, apparently the concept is not new so Southpark might have taken the rough plot from another, older film. But it's not a remake of another film, because this one is based on a short story by Annie Pereloux and I'm not aware of an older version.

I've seen it and it is a beautiful film in every respect. Its the kind of film that plays on your mind for a good while after you've seen it. Loved it.

I've not seen Crash, but it'll have to be completely mindblowingly brilliant for me to agree Brokeback didnt deserve best picture.
