Chips popular on a 1980's model of car with exclusively normally aspirated engines? Did they make much difference?

I know what it sounds like, but owners claimed that they made a massive difference on 6 pot cars (320i, 325i and 335i converted). I think there were a few claiming gains of 10hp odd on the rolling road, improved "drivability" (particularly on Autos) and even improved fuel economy. I know, it sounds like the standard marketing gruff you read for ebay chips that don't do anything useful, but everyone is addiment that they (ones provided by reputable sellers obviously) work well. I only ever had asthmatic 8v cars so didn't go down that route myself.
