Bruce Willis acting-career

I know somebody whose mother had this specific type of dementia in her late 50's

She very rapidly went downhill and was dead within 12 months. Eventually she couldn't swallow food and was being tube fed.

Awful.
This is alas the end game for most forms of dementia. Core functions simply stop working. My fathers last few weeks in hospital were effectively being unable to swallow or breathe correctly and having his lungs drained periodically. What a way to go, not!

Shouldn't laugh, but that comment made me chuckle.

My grandad used to "joke" quite regularly that it would be fine with him if he went up to bed and never came back down.

A few years later after dementia did its work, yea he probably wasnt joking.

And what is the point of sustaining life like that? We allow animals to be put out of their misery by a vet but the best humans get is a 'Do not resuscitate'
Does Switzerland or sweden do euthanasia, although in the case of dementia would be difficult to get the person to agree as they won't know they are ill.

Such a worrying way to go, knowing that at some point you are going to have no idea and the folks around you are going to have to witness it. Horrid way to go for anyone.

Horrible horrible disease and feel sorry for Bruce or anyone else that has to suffer with it or watch a loved one go through it.

I've always said us human beings should be able to sign upfront a criteria by which we allow euthanasia, no set sweeping rules but custom tests/checks which we can define and if we fail then so be it.

For some it may be something simple like not being able to remember your name, and for others it could be massively more complicated, i.e. if I still recognise a family member at least once every six months even for just a few moments then keep me going.

Like a Will is should be your own wishes and others (family/friends) have to respect it. Would save a massive amount of heartache, and cost, for loved ones not to mention huge savings to the NHS.

My mother has it, utter ******* of a disease. You live a life, basically forget it all and end up in bed 24/7 being spoon-fed just randomly firing out words that have zero meaning.

She had 3 sisters 3 brothers and out of those 1 sister and 3 brothers died of dementia complications, the other 2 sisters died of breast cancer. She's the youngest of the lot and the last remaining,

Looking forward to the years ahead knowing my family's track record on dementia....

I thought i read not long ago they developed a drug now, its not a cure and cant reverse the damage but at least halt or slow the progress of dementia?

Read something like that myself, my uncle lived in the u.s. |(her brother) he was on some kinda drug that really slowed it down, by the end when he died he was 90 and it didn't seem to have affected him that much overall. He could still function reasonably well mentally, though he was in a wheelchair. He remembered his past and his current family, could sing songs etc. My mother was diagnosed at 65 in 2015, last few years shes went downhill badly. Basically exactly the same way her mother went. Its pathetic seeing someone reduced to a baby like state.

Dementia isn't a single disease its a symptom or a general term which covers a wide range of things. There are many causes of dementia. You can treat some causes and not others. Saying someone has Dementia loosely speaking is like saying someone has a cough. Both Dementia and a cough are symptoms that can be caused by a wide variety of things. At least that's how I understand it. So its very possible you read someone developed a drug for one cause of Dementia and not the others.

EDIT * Before the usual suspects misread my post/ I am not saying having Dementia is like having a cough. The cough is just an example of how Dementia is a symptom that like a cough can be caused by a great many differing things. So there is no single cure for Dementia. This is why some people get treatment and others do not.

It sounds like a good apology imo, I just assumed it was a single thing rather than covering multiple things. Fwiw I assumed poor memory/possible poor coordination.

Good luck getting that in this country, unless you are rich.

Its taking the NHS about a year and a half just to get to a diagnosis, I think the drug only works or is more effective the earlier it's used, so it's too late.

Guy round the corner has it, wife who is getting on has to do everything, can't get help, nothing until he's been diagnosed.

My wife had to go out and nab him as he was wondering around the village and take him back home.

It is awful yeah, but our country and therefore it's healthcare system is basically ******.
