Bruges over Christmas

Another shout out for Ghent from me, we went in July. We’re doing Bruges and Ghent in December again, super easy via the tunnel.

As for places to stay I definitely recommend the Dukes Palace Residence (annex to the main Dukes Palace hotel but a lot cheaper!) in Bruges or the Hotel Navarra (pool in the basement and included in the price). Both have parking but if they are full there is a cheaper multi-storey a few mins walk from each.

In Ghent I recommend the 1898 The Post hotel, right on the main square. It’s not cheap but it’s great. In Ghent you’ll need to use public car parks.

As for places to visit most of the good stuff has been mentioned but both the Halve Maan Brewery and Brewery Bourgogne des Flandres Bourgogne des Flandres are both good. Check the opening times though, the both only operate in the day and are closed on some days. The Halve Maan tour is guided where as the other one is an audio tour IIRC.

There is a brewery based in Ghent called Gruut, good beer, slightly different as it’s flavours with spices rather than hops.

Ribs in beer was good, there is another place closer to town called Bones which was also decent. Do stop at Aux Merveilleux De Fred, delicious is all I’ll say. Le Pain Quotidien makes a good breakfast or lunch spot.

Edit: presumably you are driving, stock up on beer at one of the supermarkets rather than the beer shops, Carrefour can be half the price for the more common beers although it may not stock the smaller stuff. Proxy Delhaize Noordzand just up from the dukes palace has a decent selection.
