If the password and encryption are strong enough then you have no chance OP, not with all the computing power in the world, at least not with today's tech.

You might want to consider some rubber hose cryptanalysis, far more efficient.

One place I worked at had every single admin password (including domain admin) on a spreadsheet, on a network location that wasn't password protected and it wasn't until I pointed out that literally anyone could open it, did they move it.

You need to know the encryption algorithm and key strength to calculate this. It could range from a realistic time frame to many times the age of the universe on current hardware.

can the method be worked out when you have a bootable OS? (bootable an OS login screen) there are probably between 1 and 1000 billion possible passwords, quite possibly to the lower end of the scale - i know the format of other passwords used
