BT Broadband Capping?

THIS IS GOD DAMN UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! MY IP PROFILE IS NOW AT 256K!!!!!!!!!

I UTTERLY REFUSE TO SPEAK TO MOHAMMED ACHMED IN INDIA WHO IS GOING TO SAY EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE OTHER MOHAMMED YESTERDAY.

THEY HAVE 'PUT IN AN ORDER' TO TURN INTERLEAVING OFF - WHICH WONT DO ANYTHING. AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH

Move to another ISP. It's a simple solution and you'll get a far better service if you move to an Enta reseller ... or in fact just about any ISP other than BT. You've said that you're not in a contract so request the MAC code now to minimise the duration of your crappy service.

Even if the problem is your line (which is actually quite possible) then at least a decent ISP will actually do something about it and try to get it resolved instead of palming you off with a load of crap.

can you recommend anyone perhaps mate? you know, before i rip my own fingers off and eat them in fustration at the fact that im with BRITISH telecom but all they want to do is give someone in india a script and enough money to feed their goats.

I recommend ADSL24, an Entanet reseller. They are all very intelligent and know all about IP profiles, etc.
You will get a far better service with Entanet.

It's possible, but extremely unlikely to be the ISP.
you'd be surprised with BT, i'm on option 3 and was downloading torrents most nights cos i'm always faster then...started gett **** poor download speeds at all times so i rang BT and asked what was going on and had they capped me, they sed "theres nothing wrong with your line speed according to our system, and no we haven't capped you we don't cap option 3 customers in any circumstances" funny how 5 minutes after the phone call i was getting my 6Mb download speeds again...

That's all well and good, but it doesn't have anything to do with your IP profile.

i had this problem with freeserve. 4 months of letters saying an average of 120GB a month was abuse and they actually cut me off!

Im with bulldog now. there customer service is poor and my 8mbit line gets 3-4mbits at most but its good speed all day and night and i would say well over 100GB a month easily with no problems (well except the crappy speedtouch modem they supplied)

yeh, i was told that i was on option 1 and that they aboloutely dont cap option 1 customers - 2mins later, my speed was at 1.5meg. That was yesterday and now its running at 256. funny that, considering it is almost guaranteed to be the fact that it is the weekend so BT have throttled the speed so that its very slow.

For the umpteenth time, it's got nothing to do with your ISP (besides that they can't be bothered fixing it) - stop your sync rate dropping so low and the sync rate should increase in due course.

Edit: I mean IP profile should increase :(

ip profile does not automatically sync i was getting 2000 ip profile
for 6 months i am currently 3500 after all the complaining i have done.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 250 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 6720 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 224 kbps

The above is an update on my current situation - been like it all bloody day. I running out of ideas - oh, and if my IP Profile says 250kbps - is that not my ISP that sets it at that level?

No, it's automatically set by BTw (as in BT Wholesale, not BT the ISP). It's automatically determined by your line conditions and your profile can take up to 3 days to raise to match your sync speed.

In other words, for your IP profile to be set to 250 kbps, your sync rate has to have dropped right down to something between 288 kbps and 576 kbps.

ah i see - ok, im a lot clearer now so thanks for that information.

So basically, at some point, my sync has dropped and as such my IP PRofile has dropped to match it. Now i know you say that it can take 3 days to correct itself, but, my connection has been 4meg, then 256, then 1 meg, then 512, then 1.5meg and now back to 256 - and all this has happened over 1 week - im running Netmeter and there isnt any interference or anything. Im going to run a full adaware scan now just in case.

Would it also be wise to plug the router into the phone socket next door so that its as close to my comp as possible?

thanks for the help.

Netmeter and a spyware scan aren't going to change your sync rate - it's between your modem and the exchange.

What you want is the router plugged into the master socket, with as short a length of decent quality cable as you can, and your phones filtered there too. Ideally, use a filtered master socket.
The distance between your router and machine(s), or how they're connected to each other, is irrelevant.

Im with BT broadband...8M connection..and yes I get the same capping effect. In the mornings its full speed....in the afternoons...it goes down to about 2M or less....in the evenings up to about 12pm Im lucky if I get the same as a 512K connection. I do download a lot sometimes but if needing to download anything...I leave my PC on during the night for a few hours. Its pretty poor that they do this now..but when you complain its to Indians who dont have a clue TBH. Unforunately I just moved house and signed up to a year with them last month when I changed my line...so Im kinda stuck with it. Poor show!
