BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

If you pick up the phone and dial 17070 then do a quiet line test, is there any crackling? If you use the phone to make a call (how quaint!) what's the call quality like?

If you have ANY problems with the voice portion of the line then raise a voice fault.

The line appears to be fine though I seldom use it. I'll try the number you mentioned, thanks.

I suspect this should come under the minimum speed guarantee. I’d be back onto BT. They’ll give you waffle about no fault being found you’ll be charged but to my mind there’s clearly a fault.

I tried the quiet line test and yes, there was some crackling. It wasn't terrible but it was there alright.
I’d report a slow speed fault and get Openreach out. When you signed up you should have been given a minimum speed guarantee. I’d be asking for an engineer and don’t listen to their warnings about charging.

Earlier today, I arranged for an engineer - due tomorrow.

Yep, I was warned about a possible charge, e.g. if the problem had been caused by damage done to the equipment, though that's not the case.

Yep, as all above - you're well below what you should be getting. The sync rate will generally go down if the line is unstable and it'll continue falling until its stable, which is normally caused by a fault or excessive noise on the line. Get on to BT and they'll get an openreach engineer out.

Thanks, everyone for the help. I'll keep you posted.

The engineer has been and the next step is that Openreach will be visiting later this week.

The telephone and VDSL service is delivered down a pair of copper wires within the cable that BT have into your property. Within that cable will be a number of pairs of wires so the engineer will likely switch your service to a different pair of wires.

Or if not specifically into the property, there will be multiple pairs between the cabinet and the pole serving your house (e.g. and your drop cable is joined there)

Anyone still having issues with Sonos products on the Smart Hub 2?

They’ve issued the firmware update to mine but I’m still having issues connecting to my smart devices. Over the course of 2 weeks, it’s gone from intermittent to not working at all again :(

This has been ongoing since April.

Is that the downstream/upstream numbers in the hub manager?

Downstream: 13.09 Mbps

Upstream: 7.2 Mbps

That sounds like what my vDSL line does now and again, I had 6+ engineers out for mine and they could not sort it. I would ask the engineer to put you on a different pair or a different port in the DSLAM as that could correct the issue which it has done for some.

Mine was due to crosstalk on the lines, even though they offer a min speed guarantee it makes zero difference with crosstalk. I have even tested changing ISP to A&A who are meant to be excellent but could not find anything with my line and seemed average at best, so I have moved it back to Zen now.

I've not even heard of A&A so I Googled them and they look like they could be an option worth considering if things don't improve over time. I also checked out Zen and bookmarked them as well.

Is it me or do BT's broadband and phone packages seem a bit pricey or are they all much the same?

It's hard to compare my first broadband user experience (or was it second?) but my memory seems to suggest that I had a smoother ride, all considered, when I was with Talk Talk. Maybe it's a defective memory or grass being greener on the other side an' all...

Sonos doesn't seem to play well with mixed 2.4/5 Ghz networks, I had to create a separate 2.4 Ghz only network for my Sonos equipment and I've not had any issues since. Can you separate them out on the smart hubs or are they not as smart as claimed?

I think you can :)

I believe the issue with the Smart Hub, though, is that there’s an issue with the firmware that doesn’t allow communication between devices on 5 GHz and 2.4 - I.e. it isn’t a Sonos issue.

All of my smart devices are exhibiting the same issue - none of them are working.

Who's the preferred provider of choice if I want to either user bridge/ap mode on a router, or be able to use a Vigor 130 in place of the supplied router (have my own TP Link Deco mesh which I'd prefer to use in router mode)?

New house has the usual suspects of LLU/FTTC providers, all with guaranteed min DL of around 30-36mbps and estimated speed of 40-60mbps (apart from TalkTalk with min of 22mbps for some reason...):

Now Broadband
TalkTalk (low guaranteed minimum DL of 22mbps!)
Plusnet (want a £50 connection fee)
BT
Sky
Vodafone
Shell
EE
Onestream
John Lewis
Zen

Whoever has the best offer on at the time after Quidco etc. At the end of the day, they are all just reselling the same product so the speed is the speed regardless of who you take.

Other things to consider are Vodaphone’s network doesn’t have the best reputation and sky make it difficult for you to use your own hardware. It’s worth looking at those two things in more detail if you are considering them.

I take it you don’t have an existing provider in place that you can just port over?
