BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Next problem is ensuring your ONT is 2.5Gb+ capable, to passthrough 1.6Gb bandwidth for that 2.5Gb router port.
#didnotreadthelink ;)

However, customers who take this FTTP plan will require an engineer visit because, in order to support that speed, Openreach will need to install a new optical modems (ONT / ONU) – either the Nokia G-010G-T or ADTRAN SDX 611Q – inside your home. Both of these support a 2.5Gbps capable Ethernet (LAN) port. Similarly, customers will also be supplied with a new router.

What's the difference in unit cost?

I should imagine that is the deciding factor at the moment.

1.6Gbps is absolutely pointless for probably 99% of people at the moment. I have gigabit and it's ample enough for me, it's the 100 Mbps upload that's the main constraint, especially with uploading backups.

Yeah it is a shame that BT are limiting the upload. All the altnets manage symmetrical 1Gb speeds so there's no technical reason why they can't.

But as I'm sure has been alluded to in this thread somewhere, I'm sure the main reason is that they don't want to impact their leased line services. It would be nice if they'd do better than 110 meg though. Even ~300 meg upload would be decent enough.

If you want Openreach to offer quicker uploads then the way to achieve that is either for Cityfibre to massively increase the number of premises they can serve, or for Virgin Media to offer faster uploads. Openreach are not competing with altnets for the most part, because there are plenty of people who would pay more to take FTTP from Sky as part of a service bundle than try an "unknown" provider like Hyperoptic.

Various forums are starting to fill up with complaints from people whos 1gb upload it being slowed right down to 20mb during peak hours.

Unless it's in one of the few areas with newer equipment you can theoretically have up to 32 households sharing 1.2Gb upload bandwidth. Each person could potentially be on a 1Gb symmetrical connection. All it takes is 2 or 3 of those people to be uploading something, or one of those people to be smashing out a torrent of the latest blockbuster and everybody else suffers. I know it sucks that Openreach put a 120mb limit on the upload but at least it means you will get that pretty much 100% of the time

Openreach allows 1000/220 on their FTTP network. I don't think the higher upload speeds can be had outside business lines though. Which is a real shame.

Pretty much yes. Or the Vigor 130. VDSL modems peaked pretty early and there wasn't much to improve on.

In reality there isn't a huge difference. The HG612 is better than the ECI modem, but it's not worlds apart and can depend on which vendor is used in your local cabinet. There's also they Draytek 130.

Thanks. Im trying to sort out a friends very messy and problematic home network. They’re using a Technicolor VDSL2 router from their ISP (Utility Warehouse) connected to Eeros which is causing double NAT. I’d like to do away with the Technicolor router and replace it with a VDSL2 modem and allow the Eeros to perform all the routing and wireless mesh functions. Trying to source a HG612 that isn’t stupidly priced is proving rather difficult!

I remember when I moved into my current house and I put my Vigor for sale on Facebook, it went really quickly and I had loads of messages.

Can you put the Technicolour into Birdge mode?

I've got one in my loft that you can have if you want. It hasn't been used since I last had VDSL which would be around 2013 but was working perfectly as far as I know. Drop me a message if you want it.

That’s incredibly kind of you, yes please. I’ll send a message.
