BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Got an email from Open Reach that they'll be starting the FTTP works on our road in March of this year - so hopefully means it's available for us from around April/May.

Only negative is that our existing broadband deals expire in January so we'll need to renew temporarily and then see what we can do from there for upgrading. We also have two lines currently and the plan was once we have access to FTTP we'd move back to just having a single line - so it might just be a case of swallowing the excessive 'out of contract' monthly costs for a few months. My only worry is that if Open Reach say March, do they actually mean October...
They usually done it very quick if it was overhead poles and underground chambers. More likely it all done within 7-10 days.

"Most" ISPs do not do contract buy-outs, some of them offer it during promotional periods.

Vodafone for example will give you up to £200 back if you take a 500Mbps or faster service from them - https://www.vodafone.co.uk/broadband/switch-and-save - but your costs with VM up until November are unlikely to be lower than £200.

Also if your VM service is reasonably reliable and you aren't in a congested area, changing from their 500/50 plan to a Vodafone 550/75, or Gig1 to 1000/115 is not going to make a huge difference other than a bit of a latency drop.

I assume Openreach are currently finalising the fibre connections in my street today.
They have a bundle of fibres pulled into the back of the van which I believe is them terminating the fibre to the node ports.

Contract with BT is up for renewal next month and it seems like it's time to switch provider to me. They are really not offering anything of value beyond their name. A router that hasn't been refreshed for 7 years and is now 2 generations behind the latest wifi tech.

So here's my VIP offer from BT - Full Fibre 900 Halo 3 - £46.90 for 24 months
Which actually is only £46.90 for 1 month as in March 2026 it's increased to £50.90 then £54.90 in March 2027. Don't forget to add £12 a month for the calls plan as well.

Thanks for making this an easy decision BT.

YouFibre are offering a similar package on an 18 month contract for £33.99 with no price hikes and while the calls plan is more expensive at £15 a month it's £10 a month cheaper.

I could probably get BT to offer a deal if I call and tell them I'm leaving but maybe they should offer a good deal in the first place.

Are there any other providers out there offering good deals?

If you need the extra upload, the clear choice is YF.

Good news the nice bloke from proper Openreach has turn up 7:55am and start work at 8am to installed fibre cable route from the Pole to my back garden wall and did this job for approx 1 hour. Finished the job completed at 9am. https://i.ibb.co/RGHfzc2D/Openreach-box.jpg

The bad news, he told me it was 1st stage job, you have to wait for another appointment for 2nd and final stage for full fibre go live. After he went off, Openreach sent me text message to say my full fibre will go LIVE on Friday, 9th January with engineer to attend inside property to do small drill. Another week to wait!

But the waiting are worth it at the end.

Will post back next Friday.

The external work is different to the internal work, so you wouldn’t have had FTTP today. They run the fibre to the box on the outside wall. Once that’s done, it’s a different appointment to do the inside part.
Like I said then. :)

They've done it that way as long as I remember. If you had yours done at the same time I'd say that's more of a one off rather than the norm.
Had mine done very early on, in fact it was at the time when they switched from a single run of fiber type installation to the little grey box and two runs. My neighbour only has a single run and no box outside and I was about a week later install wise.

When did they change to a two step installation? Mine was all done in about an hour by two guys.
The engineer say to me on his record screen by BTw say I need two stages but he say I have no idea because it was one install job, but he couldn't do it today because he didn't bring for inside ONT box. He understands how disappointed I was, but he can't do anything about it. He was on his own doing outside work at the pole and to my back wall with the ladder. He could have phoned up Openreach to send someone out to do inside work with ONT box but he say all other's engineer are busy schedule.

My VM contract is up for renewal next month so I dropped an email to Aquiss last night. Had quite a few random disconnects with VM as of recent (maybe due to the weather, I don't know) but it's started to get on my nerves especially when gaming.

Currently paying £38.70 and their renewal offered me something daft like £38.40 (whoop de-do). I'd rather spend a bit more and get a top quality connection with good support than have to deal with VM if I'm honest.

My VM isn’t up until June but EE are offering to pay £300 of early cancellation, so I’m very tempted.

VM hasn’t been terrible but their customer service is diabolical, and EE will be cheaper with a better quality connection.

VM were the only available ISP in my village for fast broadband so they’re heavily subscribed.

Its EE i signed up with for this reason our vm contract is up at end of march or april signed up with EE on the first of december openreach came out a few days later spray painted the pavement back to the nearest street chamber, got a back with an installation date of 7th of march due to 35m of ducting needed. Already knew our house was served by a DIG(direct in ground) armour cable and would probably have a long lead for the service to be activated so ordered early.
