BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

It should feel snappier because the latency is probably at least 50% better! Not to mention a whole lot less packet loss...

To be fair, my Virgin connection wasn't that bad. Latency was around 15 ms to the same server that I've been testing the EE connection on, which was 12 ms. I also experienced next to no packet loss with the Virgin connection.

Interesting. I saw a huge drop in latency when switching to Openreach FTTP from Virgin coax. ~15m down to ~4ms most of the time.

Our village newsletter landed last night and there was a note in it that FTTP is now available.

So I fired up the OR availability checker for our house to be told... building in the next year :(

What's annoying though is the house opposite us can order according to OR. I presume FTTP would be run overhead, so that's very strange as their existing copper line comes off the same pole as our house.

Try the BT Wholesale Checker instead. The Openreach one lags behind by a few weeks.

They've been "building in this area now" for 9-12 months but no sign of us being able to move away from 15mb ADSL. Every other street around us has FTTP but I assume we're not a priority as there's not many houses where we are.

No doubt we'll be in the 1% outside of the governments target for 2032.

BTW checker agrees with OR - FTTP is not available for our PSTN number (also checked by address).

House opposite (based on address lookup) - FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered (FTTP Install Process says Stage 1).

There is somewhere you can email, it may be a database error which they can correct and allow you to order.

You’ll have to google it mind!

Good shout! One Google result took me to a thread on the ThinkBroadband forum and found this link to an OpenReach form which I've submitted:

If you use the BT Wholesale checker on the house fed from the same pole as you that can get FTTP, what does it say after "Our records show the following FTTP network service information for these premises"

Getting quite near the end of my contract now with BT.

Looking into the suggestions of others, it looks like switching to Plusnet for their Full Fibre 300 package is one of the best for VFM.

Most of the others that have appealed to me aren't yet available in my area, such as YouFibre, Community Fibre, or Zzoom.

-----

I don't have a phone line, but was wondering if it's worth considering a SoGEA package?
The speeds do seem rather slow compared to the FTTP ones.

FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered.

LoS problem from where? The pole?

Nah it's fine, if they show FTTP then you should be able to get it. I was just checking that Openreach hadn't dug new duct in behind the buildings and was going to serve them from the rear underground. You should get a positive outcome from that form.

Thanks Caged. I got a case reference back and the auto-response says I should hear in five working days.

Thank you for your recent enquiry via openreach.com regarding the availability of fibre broadband.

The good news is that Ultrafast Full Fibre Broadband is coming to your property by the end of March 2027

I’m sorry we cannot give you a more accurate date, and our plans are subject to change, but once the work is completed, you’ll be able to order Ultrafast Full Fibre from any one of the hundreds of broadband providers who are powered by our network.

Where's the bang head smiley?

You can't reply to the response, so I've filled in the form again asking for a reason rather than "Computer Says No"...

I'll count properly once home tonight but Streetview shows five overheads cable going to five houses from the pole outside of our house, so I'm thinking it is fed underground and BTOR think the duct to it is blocked or something. The house that can order is a little bit closer to the main road through the village so perhaps BTOR think they could feed overhead from another pole. But then the two neighbours on our side which are closer to that road should be able to order and they show up as not available as well.

I’ve just upgraded to 900mbps service with my ISP, it’s done via PPPoE, my old but trusty Amplifi HD doesn’t do more than 600mbps down, I’m assuming it’s just too lightweight to handle it? The Fritzbox 7530ax the ISP sent works flawlessly at just over 900 down.

Had the email from OpenReach this morning that we've now got FTTP available! We currently have two lines (FTTC) to the house, one with Vodafone and one with Plusnet, just now need to consider which one I upgrade and which one I cancel - and probably based on the cheapest cost to cancel / upgrade.

I have really liked Plusnet for the past 3 years, their support has been great whenever needed.

OR replied to my second enquiry yesterday:

I've looked into your enquiry, and we’ll need to investigate this further. I’ve passed it on to our offline team to review.

One of us will be back in touch within 5 working days.

So that's a little bit of progress. I did have a better look at the telegraph pole outside our house last night and realised that one of the five cables is actually the connection to the next pole up the lane. That pole has a ducted cable running up it, so I presume that is the feed to our pole (I can't see anything going up the outside of our pole either). So we get no FTTP until OR pull fibre to their and my thought that the house opposite (which can have FTTP) could be connected in the other direction to the existing copper line could be right.
