BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

So I put in an order to switch from BT to IDNet this morning, as my BT contract is ending in 8 days.

Unsurprisingly, BT retentions called me this afternoon with a subpar offer.

£34.99 a month for 900 mbps 24 months contract. It is subpar due to the awful annual mid contract rises, so by March 2028, I'd be paying more than my IDNet package that I chose.

No deal. Goodbye BT.

Why IDNet? Been a few posts recently about poor customer support. Plus they use Zen for backhaul IIRC, which has its own issues.
Seen they had decent reviews on ISPReview and I believe @MrRockliffe has had a good experience with them so far. Though, I've not seen the posts you're referring to.

Their OR pricing was better for me when I was comparing them to others, such as Aquiss, etc.

Zen for backhaul is not the same as Zen providing your PPPoE gateway. I have a site on IDNet in Leicestershire and it’s never routed via Manchester

Well then... as mentioned, I submitted my order to switch from BT to IDNet. BT's offer was terrible... until I got another offer from them via email.

£24.99 a month for 500 mbps to stay with BT. That beats our current price and their new customer price. Even with the annual price rises factored in, it will still be cheaper than anything else we've found.

So annoying that I had to submit to switch for them to offer this... I did want to switch after looking at these other guys like IDNet, but it just doesn't make sense to pay more for no compelling reason... especially as the service we've had with BT has been decent, rarely any downtime, etc.

I guess I'll have to cancel the order tomorrow.

Good timing, Sky TV is due to renew in December, maybe I can get them to do a renewal deal and include Broadband, while paying EE off. EE is quite expensive now, although EE will have 6 months to run so not sure the bill credit will pay for it all.

Can't believe they make it ten times worse than before. Used to be very accurate speed test spot on every time from old layout but not anymore sadly.

Mine was getting on this new site layout

Server
Erith
Download
374.1 Mbps
Upload
107.6 Mbps
Ping
10 ms

Before the old one site was 931.2Mbps / 108.1Mbps 10ms

Why and what have you done OVHCloud?

It's not just you

OVHcloud network speed test — proof.ovh.net
Server: Erith (lon1-eri.speedtest.network.ovh.net)
Download: 251.4 Mbps
Upload: 102.4 Mbps
Ping: 14 ms
Jitter: 0.6 ms
Network: AS2856 · British Telecommunications PLC
2026-09-28 13:19 UTC

I get 1600+Mbps on https://www.speedtest.net/

Idnet have been faultless for me, great service as well the couple of times I needed to use it.

Id probably go for the current Zen deals if I were looking now.
I'll probably continue to swap between idnet, zen and Aquiss.

Try this instead:
Download test
iperf3 -c lon1-eri.speedtest.network.ovh.net -p 5201 -R

Upload test
iperf3 -c lon1-eri.speedtest.network.ovh.net -p 5201

FTTP currently being installed right now into the house, it's going to feel like stepping into the future going from 13Mbps on the one line to 500!

Keeping the upstairs FTTC line for another month as that Plusnet contract will expire in November - then it'll be great to have just one line again (for cost reasons) and that single line to be so much faster than what we've had for the last few years.

My step was even better, I went from 10 years at 1.5Mbps to 900Mbps

I've just received an email from my current provider saying the old copper broadband is being terminated in my area in 2027. So it looks like I need to move into the modern age and get fibre.

Sky are offering a deal for 900mbps for £8 and Plusnet are offering the same for £27. I'd appreciate opinions on either of those two providers good/bad/avoid etc. I'd like to use my own router with them.

Just noticed EE are doing a deal for 1600mbps for £41 which is also tempting.

Thanks.

Look on uswitch, i got EE 1600Mbps for £33.99 last month.

I've been on the Plusnet 900Mb service for a few months now, had zero issues. Signed my dad up to it and a mate or two and got discounted bills through their referral scheme.
