BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

6 months on and the service has been fantastic. Paired with a good newsgroup provider downloads are maxxed out. Only time my speed has dropped is when I've had to unplug the modem which dropped the profile slightly temporarily

I got infinity installed yesterday and I have been using speedtest.net to check my speeds and I am shocked at how unstable they are. One minute its in the late 20's and then a minute later its 17. Uploads seem to stay around 8ish mark but the dl rate can drop to as low as 5. Is this normal until it becomes stable after a while?

BT state I should get around 27mb but I have a feeling it will be between 10-20mb.

Let the training finish, I can't remember how long it takes, but it's quite a few days.

On speedtest.net make sure you're picking the same server each time.

BT quoted 28 meg for my line and I ended up with a consistent 37 meg from day one.

There is no training period on FTTC, DLM will detect errors and instability and the next day ( around 6 ish ) it will correct your line, DLM is always on and either chops your speed down or increases the level of interleave on your line.

What is the BT speedtest profile for your line and have a look in this thread to unlock the modem to get the full line stats.

Throughput can fluctuate for the first 48 hours, it should settle down soon after that though so start worrying if it doesn't in a few days.

Quick question - currently have 20M VM broadband - been absolutely spot on for years but over the last four months its been absolutely terrible at peak times - made numerous complaints and received numerous assurances - all to no avail. So, generally, BT infinity any good? And what is BT's customer service like?

Many thanks

Just got around to testing my connection via http://speedtester.bt.com/ like mentioned above. I tested using cat5e instead of wifi for those wondering.

Here are the results:

- Download speed achieved during the test was - 32762 Kbps
- For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 12000-38715 Kbps .
- Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -38715 Kbps

- Upload speed achieved during the test was - 8254 Kbps
- Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps

I gather from the test, I shouldn't have anything to worry about and speedtest.net shouldn't be trusted?

Try the Amsterdam server on speedtest.net always seems the most reliable for me.

I think you are on the 17a profile as your ip profile is 2kps off the max, which means you are connecting at 39998 instead of 39999 ;)

for those of you worrying about latency when switching over to BT infinity. I ran a f8lure graph.

Ignore the spikes that's just me downloading. A perfect graph there with 0 pl.

That's how its ment to look VM customers.

Just signed up for Infinity. I know I probably should have checked first, but are BT still messing about with Phorm and targeted ads or have they stopped that now?

This is how my FTTC line looks, and has looked since the day i had it installed back in early May.

ADSL24 by the way. Me = Very happy. :)

Yeah, it'd be great if the current unlimited option was merely upgraded to 80/20 Mbps so we don't have to pay any more. I also wonder if it'd affect existing contracts at all...
