BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

How odd.

Since my last batch of troubles last week, equipment has been on since then and I have been downloading over 4MB/s.... hitting 4.5MB/s at times.

However I just wanted to check that things where still ok today, to see that my speeds are down to 3MB/s - 3.5MB/s

Not a big difference but big enough.

Now I know a reboot of the equipment will sort this out, but could it just be congestion?

Current results:

Usually its at 37Mb/s

Basically I'v lost a whol 1MB/s download speed.

I don't suppose you've checked your IP Profile?

It was a congestion issue.

I just tried downloading from the Nvidia site, and I am back up to 4MB/s

I am not used to congestion you see, coming from the Be network.

Not sure how true this is but the engineer said that the speed will double by Christmas.
BT do plan to double the speed: http://www.ispreview.co.uk/story/20...-customers-and-preps-80mbps-fttc-service.html

I'm supprised the engineer told you it would double by christmas though, sounds very confident. The news is that speed upgrades are starting at the end of the year and continuing through 2012. Maybe you knows something we don't, like your area will be the first to see the upgrade.

EDIT: Don't suppose he told you your line length, that is, between your house and the cab?

opethdisciple, just checking your testing at multiple speedtest websites and in the case of speedtest.net, at mulitple servers?

speedtest.net servers are up and down for me but actual downloads remain high, you need to test multiple sources for an accurate indication of you current speed.

If you IP Profile is remaining constant you shouldn't worry about slight speed fluxuation.

I find the best way of testing my download speed is to start a newsgroup download and see how quick that is. I've never not been able to max any connection, including a Virgin 100mb one, with a Giganews or Astraweb download.

Speedtest.net is fine, and the test that seems closest to real-world download speeds, but you can't beat a proper download.

This is true and I agree, however I also verify it by trying to download something from the Nvidia or/and ATI driver sites, and the speeds where down.

Basically peak time congestion.

The engineer said that I would receive 35mb/s on my line and that I should wait for 2 weeks to reach the maximum speed. It's been over 10 months now and I'm only getting 15mb/s. The cabinet is relatively close to my house as well. Would it be worth ringing BT?

Yeah i'd like to know that too, when i had mine installed one guy was at the cab and another installing the modem, i never saw the cab guy to ask him..... :(

I do notice a couple of very weak BTFON wireless points in my area/up and down the road, thats the HH right? Would that tell me whos got Infinity?

Do you get BTFON on non Infinity BT broadband?

I know its not very accurate, i have FTTC via ADSL24 so no BT FON here, but i'm curious. :)

I'd sign up for it if my Sky Anytime+ would work on there. Some stupid reason you got to have Sky broadband too, not that there is anything wrong with my broadband..

Yeah i dont get that either, I want Sky AT+ and i can get far faster via FTTC than i can via Sky BB.

Im not going to Sky BB....

I just hope Sky decide on FTTC, as I also want Sky AT+,& I want to change from BE, to Sky+, but as I'm a long way from the exchange I don't want a worst connection than what I already have.

I had a walk round my estate, to see if anyone had the home hub 3, search for something similar to BTHub3-MJT9 wireless SSID, I haven't found any here, 90% of people are on Sky.

I recently disabled it on my BT Broadband opt.3 8mb ADSL connection. Although, I don't have a home hub for people to utilize the service, I just wanted to make sure it was off :p

How'd you check that? Would be interesting to know. :)
The engineer who did my install did both the faceplate/modem and the connection at the cabinet, so once he had been to the cabinet and back I asked him.

BTFON is on BT Total Broadband as well as Infinity. So can't use that to tell unfortunately.
