BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I read that wall mounting helps with the heat issues, improving stability.

Its weird because on that speedtest you linked you have 7ms, which makes it look you still have interleave off (fastpath), which would be the first thing to turn back on if you have stability problems.

For the first 10 days BT leave interleave off, after the 10 days they turn it back on permanently. This is a shame because I'd prefer interleaved off for the better pings

Hmm? mine is off, 12ms to BBC ect, when I first got infinity it was like 22 to BBC.

I get around 13-14ms to BBC aswell, however I can tell in game that it's on, as the first 10 days my pings were almost half what they are now. I even contacted the CEO's PA about it and she told me there is no possible way of turning interleaved off after the first ten days, so I'm guessing you just have very good routing :D

Mine haven't changed since install, still the same 12-15ms to most of the UK servers on my bc2 list

I am sure I remember the line dropping late at night and my pings halving, could have been a dream tho lol.

My pings are exactly the same as they were on Be*

Sigh, might have to test by spam switching off the router for abit...

Argh so lucky, dont switch the router off!! Enjoy the awesome pings :)

Well my net just dropped and it seems like I am back on the correct IP profile, hopefully the speed sorts its self out.

I finally managed to get my Infinity order placed yesterday over the phone. It only took 3 attempts due to various problems at BT's end with their order systems.

I've got an installation date of the 19th July. With estimated speeds of 36.1Mb/9.1Mb.

Currently getting this from O2

Few questions though....
The sales rep mentioned that the Openreach engineer will need to install software on to my PC, is it just an installer to setup the BT email account? If so can I decline as I won't be using the supplied BT email address?
Will I be better to use the HomeHub 3 for the first 10 days or so until the line training has been carried out? Then switch over to my preferred router of choice a Netgear WNDR3700.

Can't wait to see how Infinity performs with my SSL Astraweb account ;)

They don't need to install software, basically they just check if the internet works, the engineer that did mine spent 30 mins trying to sort the WiFi (he didn't have a clue, he was entering the key as WEP instead of WPA), so I just took it off him and plugged a LAN cable in.

The Homehub is just a router, you can replace it instantly as long as you don't touch the white modem :)

Astraweb maxed my connection constantly, can stream full size blurays instantly with bintube player :) (now with supernews tho)

Hmm why so long till your installation? mine was like 4 days after ordering, did you get to pick the date?

ALL lines with BT Infinity have interleaved turned on after 10 days.

So thats only Bt that insist on using Interleaving? Do other ISP's other than Bt have an option?

I'm assuming i have it off here, with pings like this, Cod, Black ops, BC2 all about 20-25 in game.

Wrong to be honest.

My ping is been 12ms since the second it was turned on.

Reason V R is getting 8ms pings is due do better peering, better hops and better location.

But difference in reality between 8 and 12ms is nothing.

If you look on ThinkBroadband site there is some well documented posts on FTTC interleaving and how much it increases ping.

Thanks for that info.

That was the best date the rep could give me. It may have something to do with the fact I'm switching my home phone service back to BT from O2 as well, that goes live a week before the Infinity install.

I'm not to bothered about the wait if I'm honest.

As for my choice of third party router what does everyone think of the Netgear WNDR3700 it seems to be a popular choice to use with Infinity instead of the HomeHub 3.
I'm mainly wanting dualband wireless N what other routers should I look at instead of the WNDR3700?

The home hub 3 isnt bad tho.....

The only dodgy part is the modem!

Anyway, I have just received an email from the person who is looking in to my BFBC2 issues:

"I have received an update regarding the BFBC2 issues and we are making some changes which should resolve the problem on 1 July"

I dont know if thats just for me, or in general... but I would assume it would benefit all.
