BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

The Draytek is running v3.7.9 but the latest version I see on the Draytek website is v3.7.4. I wonder if v3.7.9 had issues and was pulled? My 130 shipped with v3.7.9 on it. I'll try a downgrade and see what happens.

It hasn't been pulled. The most recent firmware on their international site is 3.7.9.1 (August 2016).

The latest firmware in the UK is 3.7.4BT (April 2016). It appears to be a UK only release to give them BT SIN 498 approval.

I'd guess that if they're going to keep BT approval it'll add some lag to the firmware releases.

I've always found the Draytek modems to er on the side of stability over speed and have generally seen lower speeds with them than other brands.

As much as I wanted to use my 2860 when we moved house the ADSL was so poor here I had to get one of the Billion models that allowed the SNR tweaking as the Draytek would sync so low (getting 1 meg more with the Billion, when you start off with just 1.5Meg that 1Meg extra makes a difference ;) ).

I know they introduced SNR tweaking to the Draytek in one of the firmware updates but it never seemed to work.

Swapped from Sky Fibre Pro to BT's 52/10 package, sync'd at full 55/10 in router.

Edit: I moaned last week about poor YouTube speeds and buffering since switching to BT. This seems to of improved this week and haven't had any buffering issues (touch wood).

This is what I used to get with my old Sky Pro up to 78Mb package, so not much worse off. Except the upload which doesn't bother me at this moment...

Annoyingly cross talk dragged my speeds down from when I first got FTTC back in November 2014. This is what I got back then before everyone else jumped on my cabinet. :(

I didn't realise there was an international site - thanks.

I'll probably give the latest version a try and see if that makes any difference.

*New* BT NTE5c 2016 Master Socket

Hi folks,

So does anyone have a new 2016 NTE5c socket installed? Tempted to get one just for the sake of it... Currently got the NTE5a socket with a VDSL Mk3 filtered faceplate.

Not sure if there are any performance improvements though?

I've had a Google and only see a people talk about the improved aesthetics and usability than anything else.

NTE5c Master Socket: https://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/nte5cmastersocket.html
NTE5c with Mk4 VDSL Faceplate: https://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/mk4btopenreachvdslsocket.html
Install Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAZp0O2OqR8

Be interested to hear if anyone has one and if it brings any performance improvement. :)

We've had a few customers who have had them fitted on a visit or a new line install. From what we can make out, it's purely aesthetics and ease of use, no technical changes that we've been made aware of.

Crosstalk brings your speed down. Vectoring undoes crosstalk.

Will definitely have to dig out my ECI modem then (if I still have it?!).

Just put DHCP on my routers WAN interface?

This, I've got one fitted and it made no difference over the old MK2 we had. What's more is it's massive and juts off the wall

Just upgraded from Virgin media 100Mb to infinity 2. Was installed Today I'm getting 60/15 is this typical? Feels much more snappy browsing than the supposedly faster virgin media

It's no thicker than the old socket combo as far as I can tell, maybe it just looks worse?

Mine is flush mounted (e.g the back box is in the wall). Had to get a sacrificial screwdriver and a small hammer to gently chip away at the plaster as there are components on the rear that stick out very close to the edge of the socket.

No difference between that and the Mk3 in terms of components, except for the IDC terminals are really nice now and don't require a punch tool. Also the faceplate routes the filtered and unfiltered elements of the line back into the rear part of the socket, so you can remove the filter element without it being attached by extension wiring, which makes upgrades really simple.

The old socket became so deep because they had to retrofit the filter interposer.

If they'd just decided that all of their sockets would be filtered they could have slimmed it down a lot.

Ok so sounds like a pointless job then, will not bother buying one for now then if no performance improvement! Haha :p

I don't understand why they haven't integrated the VDSL filter into the socket though? They could've made it much less intrusive. Or is it just me?

Not everyone uses their master socket for their broadband connection.
