BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I was meant to move to BT yesterday. Got confirmation email and text to say everything was live. Get home and set up the router, nothing.... 2 hours on the phone to BT (already in the test socket etc) now have an engineer coming out on Saturday. Not a good start. Had no internet for 2 and a half weeks now.

I have been using a Draytek 2860n for almost three years with PlusNet VDSL2 (Openreach hardware), it's pretty solid connection and the modem supported G.INP with a firmware upgrade. I like the modems but they are quite expensive, there is also many features that most regular users would never require. Once setup they are troopers mind and never need attention. They are really an enterprise grade router/modem, if you work from home or need the features such as VPN or running your own servers then yes there definitely worth buying.

I can only hope GregI hasn't waited (with baited breath) for the last 7 months for that reply.

Uther, any chance you'd be able to run a couple of speedtests after 8pm?

Test done at 8.29pm, wireless connection on Infinity 1.My line only supports about 48 down anyway.
Plusnet fibre was regularly giving me speeds of less than 1Mbps by this time of night with two others sharing the connection! Not sure if it's just the HH6 having better wireless than the Plusnet 582n router.

Thanks mate. I'll give it a week, so how it goes / whether it improves. I'm surprised that exactly the same kit/cab for me this time last week that there's so much variance.

I switched to the Draytek from the Openreach ECI modem because the Openreach modem was failing. I'm getting about 15Mbps less downstream from the Draytek than I was with the Openreach modem.

That's quite a bit. Might see if I have an ECI one laying about and seeing if I get any difference.

Have you updated the firmware on the Draytek?

Over a month later and I am now connected with BT

Ran speed test and I am getting

This is on a 55/10 package. Normally I get max speeds as I am close to the cabinet so will investigate by running modem stats later today. I am using the Openreach Huawei modem and AC87U.

That's pretty close to "max stats" and it should improve a bit over the next few days anyway. Even when I was close enough to a cabinet to sync at 115 Mb/s (obviously capped at 78 Mb/s) I only got maybe 75 Mb/s when doing speed tests.

Also remember that the "55 Mb/s" package is likely actually 55000 kb/s, so it'll report as 53.7 Mb/s maximum.

I find BT Infinity 4 to be brilliant! Had no issues with them or the HH. Previously in an older house I would find the HH kept dropping connections, but this one seems fine.

I have FTTH/P, so the connection is pretty much constantly at a fast speed, 300-330.

£30 a month, I would definitely recommend it

Have you updated the firmware on the Draytek?

The Draytek is running v3.7.9 but the latest version I see on the Draytek website is v3.7.4. I wonder if v3.7.9 had issues and was pulled? My 130 shipped with v3.7.9 on it. I'll try a downgrade and see what happens.
