BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

That’s very unusual, if the BT wholesale checker shows your line is capable, then every provider can re-sell it, BT can’t have any form of competitive advantage or receive a preferential service from OpenReach.

Anyone having any issues today?

My internet is very slow. When I run traceroute its taking ages and more often than not just a load of ***** instead of hops.

If I traceroute to www.newsnow.co.uk it's quite bad.

---

Must be the PC. Every thing is normal on my phone.

---

I know what this was now. I set IPV6 DNS on my Fedora workstation and it caused this slow DNS lookups.

Issues? I’ve got a missing faults tech since yesterday afternoon, I think he’s hiding with the missing installer from the week before last and the three people who failed to do callbacks. I asked BT to try and ping them (100% loss) and when that hasn’t worked they tried a traceroute... it timed out. I’m at the stage where by i’m actually convinced the g.fast team consists of 1 person who works 8-6pm Monday to Friday and has an office full of cats who are employed to do most of the actual work.

Yes, after several weeks of dealing with BT, I may finally be loosing my mind.

What's the record for BT missed appointments? I'm running 75% failure rate overall, 50% on installs, 100% on faults, a total of 4 truck rolls. Should I start laying trail's of bacon sandwiches first thing on a morning or do cups of tea work better? Perhaps a change my deodorant?

I've noticed that some people are booking appointments for external faults when the engineer is never going to visit the house anyway. It happens at Sky too. An appointment is booked for an external fault but when openreach accept the fault they disregard the appointment completely as, well, why do they need to go to the house if the fault is external?

If you ever call an ISP with a line fault and they say it need to go to an Engineer visit ask them what the test failure code is. This is a good graphic to identify where the fault lies. The only time an Engineer will need definitely to attend the property and an appointment will need to be booked is for a 'CA' fault location.

Openreach Line test results actually tell you if an appointment is needed, as advised on the Openreach website but some ISP advisors still mess it up.

Appreciate the pointer, I have an appointment for tomorrow (Friday) that apparently has been confirmed as routed to a senior engineer... i’ll call later today to confirm again as i’m sceptical. In fairness the speed issue is now within range, even if it’s on the low end of the estimate, the only unresolved issue is the master socket now, but at this stage I may as well push the issue, get the socket sorted and ask nicely if they can reset DLM again as i’ve got nothing to loose.

Went up to see our new build house the other day. Not moving in untill the end of January.

The BT fibre box is now installed in the cupboard under the stairs. Green lights on and theres a serial number on the front.

I thought ahead and had network points in the house leading back to the fibre box which can plug into the super hub router. All out the way under the stairs.

Is it possible to order the internet from BT befire I move in? Or do I have to wait until my move in day to call them ?

Really wanna get the internet up and running on the day I move in.

Thanks Ben

If the engineer doesn't need access or you know when they'll need access I don't see why you can't order now.

I would get the order in now as there is usually a few weeks wait :)

If the engineer needs access, book the day after (you rarely get the keys at 9am and rebooking is a pita), if they don’t then book the day you complete/get the keys.

Finally close enough to my Sky Fibre contract end date (6th Jan) to start a switch. I am going back to BT which will be a blast of fresh air after the awful service from Sky. We have had the router constantly dropping the connection, slow downs and abysmal single threaded performance yet they can find no fault on the line or the equipment so that was 18 months of hassle. We were with BT before Sky and that was the best connection we ever had so going back to them was a easy choice. Ordered the Fibre Essential package (exchange is too far away for anything faster) through Topcashback and I am getting £115 cashback (which actually tracked for once) and a £70 reward card. Cost is £29.99 for 18 months which is a bit less than I am currently paying for Sky Fibre. Switchover date is 9th Jan which can't come soon enough.

Best of luck to you sir.

Anyways i am changing isp and the deadline is jan 4th of next year.

Changing from virginmedia cable to zen internet, reasons are no price increases, better ping, better support, and overall customer service.

If you go here https://www.trustpilot.com/review/bt.com and take all the reviews with a pinch of salt so yeah.

Anyways with virgin my connection is fine i give it 4/5 because i get the full speed but the virgin media customer support is rubbish which i give 2/5 at most.

Dan.

TIL: VoIP faceplate is required for the VoIP enabled product (SOGFast = green port cover for phone, not the all white version), BT cancelling the cease on POTS didn’t help my sync, now I have NDT/no power on the line at the socket and the sync has improved, but not by a massive amount, though i’m at the start of another 10 days DLM, i’ve started higher than i hit after previous DLM and it’s gradually gone up over the last 2hrs.

Good luck.... Sky have UK based TS for all that are actually quite good, BT... you pay a premium for UK based TS, your ‘single thread’ issue smacks of routing or remote issues, if the fault is on the line what did Sky do when you raised it again?

Nothing, they wouldn't investigate further as the engineer they booked couldn't find a fault. The problem started from day one of the switch from BT to Sky so we have been stuck with a below par connection for 18 months. I found Sky customer services to be useless and all they wanted to do was fob me off after running through their tests multiple times. Never again. At least when I was with BT it just worked perfectly and I had no need to call their customer services.

Fair enough,

It is like me on virgin media the connection has been reliable and as far as i know always got the full speed, but the ping times leave something to be desired so i understand where your coming from so despite the negative reviews wherever i understand.

How does zen work? Apparently they can offer me a higher speed than BT can do by just under 20mb from 50mb to 68mb minimum guaranteed.

Zen eh, well for me the average speed is 60-66 mbps, so i don't know how zen works.

Apart from that they have good reviews unlike bt, plusnet, sky, ee on trust pilot website.

So far it takes like from 0 to 5 minutes to speak to someone on technical support or sales and are helpful so yeah.

I'll let you know of my entire experiance with zen but so far it has been good.

As for what bremen said he is correct but it comes down to the actual core network of zen which is outside of this you know?

Dan.

edit this is what dslchecker says about my broadband line,

FTTP is not available.

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (VDSL or G.fast) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

This line is on a Market B Exchange.

In order to be eligible for handback, downstream speed should be less than Downstream Handback Threshold values.

Throughput/download speeds will be less than line rates and can be affected by a number of factors within and external to BT's network, Communication Providers' networks and within customer premises.

The Stop Sale date for Datastream is from 30-Jun-2012; the Formal Retirement date for Datastream is from 30-Jun-2014. The Stop Sale date for IPstream is from 31-Dec-2012; the Formal Retirement date for IPstream is from 30-Jun-2014.

Please note that postcode and address check results are indicative only. Most accurate results can be obtained from a telephone number, NAD, UPRN or Access Line ID (ALID) check.
Note:

Thank you for your interest.

edit

The broadband line and broadband it self from zen will activate on january the 4th 2019.

DSL checker shows low of 67mb. This is what zen site says.

BT site shows minimum of 49mb.

I entered my home phone number on all 3 sites to get the most accurate results.

Well in my experience with the adsl line it on the zen website said around about 1 to 3mbps which is correct because i remember the line download speed being 3mbps so i know that is true.

Had sky adsl back then, anyways that is a entire copper line network all the way to the exchange which is 3 miles away from me.
