BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

hi mate im in edinburgh - if it's any help it's most likely the high usage given covid, about 2 weeks ago i was barely getting above 500 now the suns out i get 1gbps even on fast.com

I’ve always been able to max out the nperf.com site and fast.com (as above it’s not accurate I’ve seen well over 1Gbps) it’s Speedtest.net that I can’t even early in the morning the most it will hit is 800 ish. I’m not concerned as all my large downloads max out the connection.

Our FTTP Openreach service is being installed as we speak. The engineer arrived bang on time (08:00) and installed the ONT point (Nokia) in my desired location; our downstairs utility cupboard. Our old FTTC copper master socket was in the loft, far from ideal. I’m hoping to run a Ethernet cable back up to the loft so I can add a wireless access point for upstairs. In the mean time here’s a photo of the ONT:

ah yes i have the same issue, let me know how you get on - maybe a routing issue

Install finished, total time taken was 2:40. Here’s the install from the outside:

The fibre line secures to the house at the same point as the copper line but instead of going into the loft it enters the house where you can see the grey plastic square. The ONT and Super Hun 2 are nicely hidden away in the utility cupboard where the electrics are:

We’ve signed up for the 500/50 service, so we’ll see how that goes!

has anyone successfully negotiated with BT on their FTTP products?

not long had a call from BT sales, offering the exact same pricing on their website even when attempting to negotiate they said "i can't see any discounts available today"

well i'm certainly in no rush to move to FTTP - my current connection with Plusnet is solid - would just like faster speeds just for the hell of it tbh, but I ain't paying an arm and leg for the privilege

I mean if BT offered their 150mb service for £10 cheaper i'd bite - £40 a month just for that is silly imo

£5 extra a month for double what Plusnet are giving you (assuming your paying around £28/month for 76Mbish)
Your basically wanted 150Mb for the same price plusnet offer 76Mb, that aint going to happen.

Just got sent an exclusive offer: £5 a month for Fibre 100 with Halo 1 for 24 months, and doesn't increase afterwards except for CPI.

The only thing is, I re-contracted back in Nov for a cheaper package; £40 a month for Superfast 2 (76/20), Landline costs and Mobile, and will need to clearly pay that off, making it in actuality ~£35 a month and a new contract starts.

But... Now thinking about it, after 24 months, that's still £5 a month + whatever CPI upped it to in theory for Fibre 100. Assuming that's correct that is... Hmmm...

The Halo plan also gives you double data on your mobile SIM, and a 4G mini hub (posted to you next day) if your main connection goes down. You also don't have to phone up to re-contract to avoid a huge price jump at the end of the initial contract period.

The £5 offer will be to add Halo onto your current package - it won't be £5 a month for everything.

Anyone else getting slow upload speeds.
Im getting 5Mb today, but when i do the BT check it says 31MB, yet every other test says 5 tops. Download is fine at 140Mb+.

I get what you're saying, I pay £24 with Plusnet.

If you look at TalkTalk's Fibre 150 package, its only £28 a month (G fast though)

BT are already the cheapest widely available FTTP ISP on the Openreach network, they have very little incentive to reduce prices further. That said, you can get £105 cashback with Quidco at the moment if you buy a 100Mbps+ service, otherwise you can wait to see what Sky and TalkTalk do.

Yep, but allot of people like myself are not necessarily going to switch to FTTP unless there's a real incentive. From their point of view they've put in all this new infrastructure and need to make their money back, so why not offer discounts?

At least you have the choice ! ;) I was one of the first to get fibre FTTC in our area all those years ago when it first was rolled out by BT. Still no sign of FTTP.

Openreach are offering discounts, and even further discounts in bulk, but the issue is there is only 1 of the big players doing FTTP, so that one player (BT) can charge what it wants. Once TalkTalk start selling in the next few weeks and Sky launch there delayed one then expect BT to drop prices at the lower end - they won't drop them at the higher end as neither TalkTalk or Sky appear to be with launching anything above the 330 speeds, and might not even launch with the 330.

Your incentive is a more reliable service that will always run at the advertised rate, if you're happy with FTTC then stick with it.

Edit: The ISPs can offer discounts if they wanted to, but they aren't the ones that invested in the infrastructure and so they have little incentive to do that. Openreach as mentioned do offer promotions for ISPs looking to take on a certain number of new lines, but the standard annual costs are from regulated price lists.
