BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I only have a 60Mbps connection so probably wouldn't notice if devices were dropping onto 2.GHz, a quick check of the connected devices does show everything I'd expect to be using 5GHz connected on that band, though. The only thing I have trouble with is the Fire TV Stick moving to 2.4GHz if I reboot the Hub, which presumably is related to it creating its own ad-hoc Wi-Fi network when it loses the one it's meant to be connecting to. Rebooting the Fire Stick always fixes it.

Meanwhile every single one of my devices is using 2.4Ghz! :D

I am currently trialling 900Mbps fibre, so it's definitely a big drop in performance for the wifi connected devices.

Router is under the stairs in a cupboard but not that far away, 2.4Ghz is meant to be better for signal but less so for speed.

The lowest-cost fix if you're happy with other aspects of the Smart Hub 2 is to turn the 2.4GHz radio off, then add on a cheap 2.4GHz 802.11n AP just for older devices.

Generally speaking, are most advertised speeds from BT and Virgin given in mbps?

Just thrown off slightly by the deal page on BT saying the fastest I can get is 50MB, and my current virgin deal is 100mbps for £10 more a month.

talktalk apparently releasing FTTP packages from July (not to be confused with G.fast)

Be interesting to see their pricing structure, and what BT plans to do to remain competitive.

BT are doing quite well at the moment not getting into a price war with TalkTalk, so I would guess they're going to do nothing. It may encourage Plusnet to release FTTP packages but that company seems to have no idea what it's doing.

I don't think it's a case of them not knowing, I think it's probably a case of BT not knowing what where to position them in the market (as they have always been BT's "budget" brand).

Might be that Plusnet remains a FTTC only provider (although can't see that is sustainable for more than a couple of years), or just offers lower speed FTTP products.

Regardless though, before Plusnet get anything else they need a new backend Billing platform - my recent experience with a package upgrade was a nightmare in terms of getting the billing sorted :)

That was more what I was referencing - I doubt BT have told them to mess up billing repeatedly.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Plusnet get FTTP products, but I can't see them ever carrying the Halo, whole-home Wi-Fi mesh stuff that BT do, and I think you're right that the speeds will be limited. I'd also expect the business services side of things to die out - if you try to buy business broadband from EE you get sent to BT Business.

I've asked BT to flip me back to the 150mbps service I had before (within 14 day cooling off period), I'll wait and see if I can get a better deal than £55/month for 900mbps.

My contract ends in Feb next year, so I can see if anything comes up around Black Friday, assuming it's not cancelled!

For now I am going to see if I can get some more hard-wired in networking done in the house so I can better use any speed boosts in the future. I've seen that powerline really doesn't work well much above 150mbps.

Been interesting "trying it out" though. BT didn't try and persuade me to stay on it with any better offers. I wish they went back to 12 month contracts because actually paying a bit extra each month for a year of 900mbps would be more tempting than being stuck paying the extra for 2 whole years.

£55 p/m is cheap as hell for 900mbps what the hell??? :/

Yes it's not a bad price please don't get me wrong, but it's just me and it's more than I need really. If I was splitting the bill and the speed then I'd be more inclined to keep it.

I don't think I'll really notice the drop in speed that much, as my powerline adaptors limit me to about 250mbps to the PC right now.

150mbps is still pretty good, and tbh really plenty for me. I wouldn't mind maybe getting somewhere in the middle (they do 300, 500 etc as well) in the future.

I'd pay £550 p/m for that down here, would flip my day to day work on its head.

(best I can hope for is 22/6 :( )

The feels bro. :( Hoping to get my survey quote in the next few days.

That's fair, I was being a bit incredulous as 20/3 feels stone age and I'd bite your hand off for 900mb! :p

BT Business just sent me this email at work. A leased line for £97.50 + VAT per month seems a bit difficult to believe....

As more businesses make the decision to re-open, some have taken the decision to allow remote working to continue for the foreseeable future. With this in mind, BT have launched a new service, BTnet Express@Home.

BTnet Express@Home is an alternative to broadband. Until now, BTnet was only available at business premises. Now BTnet becomes available ‘at home’, providing a direct, private internet circuit from your residence to BT’s core network, bypassing the existing domestic broadband network.

This offers added resilience and key benefits such as…

  • Direct Internet connection to BT’s core network, no sharing
  • Bypass Broadband; the circuit is not shared with other properties, no slow downs
  • Circuit performance is always the same, upload and download speeds are symmetrical
  • Super low latency always, ideal for Video Conferencing and Voice calls
  • 5 hour target fix, 24/7, backed by BT’s industry leading service level agreement
  • Managed Security with a Next Generation Firewall, including Anti Malware / Content Filtering protection and Intrusion detection. VPN capable.
  • Benefit of BT’s direct network links to major software application data centres for better application performance with Microsoft, Salesforce, AWS and many more

Circuit prices start from £ 97.50 + VAT per month and all services are subject to availability.
