BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

If they want G.fast, aren't you shafted anyway if you want to use your own stuff? I don't think Sky and BT give out a separately G.fast modem anymore and neither of the supplied hubs have a bridge mode. There wasn't any g.fast modems to buy seperatly either last time I checked.

Ah ok, didnt realise you needed a newer style OR Modem for G.Fast, looks they're selling for around £100-150 on the bay, so will have to nab one. Alternatively the Draytek Vigor 2762 modem/router supports both G.Fast and Sky's DHCP61 requirement and they're around £105 with the option to run in bridged mode, so that could be a go-er!

Thanks for letting me know though Arma, would have had a proper egg on face moment!

Looks like Quidco are doing £125 cashback on the Fibre 250 at the moment so I guess that'll pay for it haha

Talktalk (well Openreach) gave me a standalone G.fast Huawei mt.992 modem as part of a new install in August this year.

ISPs can order the modems from Openreach, they aren't assigned to jobs by default - so if you buy from Sky, EE and BT then you won't get a separate modem and it's very likely that you won't be able to bribe the Openreach tech to give you one either.

Where are you seeing that the DrayTek 2762 has a G.fast modem built into it?

A few folk on forums have said they're using one, I think it has to be the newer AC model though, but I can't see any specifics on the spec page that list G.Fast to be fair, only the Vigor 166 does.

Aye, the only folk i've read that get a separate OR Modem are TalkTalk customers, presumably because their supplier modem/router doesnt support G.Fast

Sky and BT are the only providers who supply a router with built in g.fast modem from memory, everyone else supply’s a modem and separate router. You can either buy one on eBay, prices have dropped since I set a record in the early days, you’re now looking at 100ish (reminds me, I need to list another one) or try being nice to your installer, it can work wonders. Be warned BT/Sky provision VoIP to the hub, without it, you are without a conventional landline unless you set-up your own VoIP.

Aye, I'll purchase one off the bay so I can hook up to my Unifi USG and leave the BT SmartHub2 in the box, I place my order tomorrow for it, will go with BT Fibre 250 and claim £125 Quidco cashback which will cover the cost, hoping all goes well with the install, hoping it's just a case of a quick faceplate change, the cab is within a stones throw of the property. No issue with losing the VOIP capabilities, not had a landline phone for the past 5 years and I use SIP for my business phone forwarding to a soft client.

Is there any major difference between the ZTLink and the Huawei modems?

Thanks for the advice

I have both, the ZT Link is just slightly newer and cheaper/not hated by the orange bloke in the USA, it’s equally Chinese. I’d point out we are getting close to BF and BT will likely improve the offer, also Sky is only £27/m for the 150 offering, I downgraded to them recently, as I use remote servers to do much of my home lab stuff, it’s fast enough and besides local storage can get expensive quite fast if you scale up.

Not that it relates to your situation, but the Sky DHCP60/61 set-up works exactly the same as it used to on FTTC (as you’d escpect), stick random details in the correct format and away you go, your AIO needs to support Sky’s DHCP set-up though, just as before, pfsense/untangle just need the usual edits.

I have been with BT infinity (FTTC) for around 7 years but switched to FTTP around 3 weeks ago, speeds have been really good

I've just changed from Sky to BT FTTP 150mb, and honestly it's been absolutely perfect! Look on cash back sites, I got my package for £29.99pm with £140 cash back.

I used and old offer link, and just pasted into the new link on the cashback site and it actually worked!!

Which link did you use?

I'm about to move into a new build that has FTTP but right now only BT shows as being available to order online (guess I need to call Zen or any other company to check they have updated their databases).

So I went through Topcashback, selected BT fiber, when it opened the link I pasted this one in
https://www.bt.com/campaign/full-fibre-240

And completed the order, it took a day to show pending in my cash back, takes about 11 weeks to actually payout.

Thanks. Turns out I found the same link and had it bookmarked in Firefox. It's offering 300Mbps for £39.99 currently but I would have liked the 500Mbps package.

Wondering now if I can hold off any order as with Black Friday / Cyber Monday coming, maybe there might be some deals around to be had.

Exactly that! When I called BT, She said that Black Friday is when they have all their deals. So I'm hoping to get a little upgrade.

My problem is just how long I may need to wait to find out if there will be any offers. I'm due to complete on the flat on the 30th October and if any deals will only be available in the last half of November then I'll be without any service for at least a month.

Any idea when any deals were offered last year?

I suppose this is the thread for it.

The voip service both BT and Sky offer, is there a technical reason why you can't use your own equipment? or is it just Sky/BT won't hand over the details you need and we just need to wait for someone to work out how to grab them or ofcom to lean on the isps, same as they did to make them play ball with using your own equipment for broadband.
