BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Then go with VM and move to FTTP providing it’s available once your contract is over.

Yeah I could but the thing is I actually want the upstream bump more than I want the downstream. Gigglebit would be handy but 350 is hardly slow, but VM would only offer an upstream bump from 35 to 50 whereas FTTP offers double that.

There's no way of finding out unless you know someone who works in the field in your area. If you need the extra speed right away then there's always the expensive option of terminating your contract early.

That's effectively what I'm on now as my contract period has ended.

Not exactly, VM have 4 prices for the same service:

  • New customer offer rate - what you were on, fixed period contract with discount off standard rate for xx months, when that ends you pay standard rate.
  • Student 9 month rate - only for students, higher rate than new customers as it’s over a shorter period.
  • Standard rate - this is what you are on now, you only need to give 30 days notice, but you aren’t paying a premium in the way someone who has a 30 day contract rate does.
  • 30 day contract rate - this is where up-front installs are expensive and you pay a premium on top of standard rate because you can cancel 30 days after install if you want to, ideal for people who may only need broadband for a few months, but significantly more expensive over the long term.
You also have offer rates/retentions specials and each sales channel has a slightly different way of using the marketing budget available.

Yes I appreciate that but I did say 'effectively'. I just meant that, as my minimum contract period has expired, I'm now effectively on a 30-day rolling contract for M350 which obviously costs more than if I signed up for another minimum term deal.

Had a letter about the price increase, stating I can cancel if I want. Only joined a month ago so feel like an increase this soon is a bit rough. I did know beforehand but if there's an opportunity to save a bit of money I'll take it.

Has anyone else called to say they'll cancel to keep their current price?

Any idea how long from Openreach telling you FTTP is available to actually being able to upgrade to it on Sky?

Been over a month now, and this weekly call to Sky to go through the same nonsense to be told it's not available yet is getting really old....

No providers are listing it on availability checkers yet, apart from the Openreach page.

It took over a month, closer to two for talk talk to pick mine up where as I would order with BT the next day.

I assume your in contract which is why you don’t want to switch? BT has decent cash back rates which brings down the price for new customers.

The next hurdle is waiting for an install date, mines not until mid May, I ordered it at the start of March.

Also time to discuss our options as we're at the end of our contract next month and **** me, the people on the chat are useless.

I wanted to remove the tV bundle as we have Sky, and just go broadband+phone (current offering for new customers is £39.99) and we pay £46 now with the price increase, yet all I get is sorry we can't offer that, you're on the best deal at the minute as the package you currently have is £76 for normal customers but rest assured when a better deal comes along we will be sure to let you know.

**** off. I am over a barrel because BT offer nowhere near the speed of Virgin, they do a max of 46Mbps compared to the 360Mbps we get now.

I hate how useless they are. Stop ******* about and just give me a better deal.

If you call the right people (Customer Relations, because you wish to disconnect), then you probably wouldn't have the issue you describe. BT etc. will offer you almost exactly what Sky can offer you in terms of connectivity in this case.

I'm such a moron, I posted this in the BT thread when my rant was about Virgin.

I am so annoyed that BT only offer a maximum of around 50Mbps in this area, why is there no planned rollout for their super fast fibre in this area? It's a joke, I do believe it's available in some areas around here, but not my street.

i've just got my quote back from Cerberus regarding FTTPoD, i think i'll have to pass on the £6000 + VAT install cost..

only other option now is too see if our estate would be interested in signing up for the Openreach FTTP community programme and split the install, we do have 100+ homes

Well finally after waiting 3months, FTTP is now fully installed and working.
