BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Damn HH 2.0 has started random restarting, already done it 3 times in last hour whilst gaming online. :(

Need to change it, so question is do I call BT and complain and ask for a HH 3.0 or buy my own 3rd party router? If so, which is a good one to go for?

Just as an update to this, was advised by BT to reset to defaults which seems to have cured the constant restarts, and they also sent me a HH3 just in case - can't really fault that tbh :)

Wow that is actually a rubbish usage quota tbh.

2 hours of downloading on Infiinity:D

You can check your package by doing a speedtest if ain't the account holder, if you have 2meg upload your on the capped package (fibre only of course).

I thought the capped package was 2MB upload but after our installation yesterday we managed to get 8mb upload which raised a few eyebrows. Anyway, i emailed my landlord today and apparently he has upgraded to unlimited package :)

Now the property i am moving to has Virgin 50MB and Bt infinity 40MB service :D Which one?

What the hell is up with the speed test?

Even though my download speed is still 4.0mb and my up is 8.0

@ Valo
Yes Openreach Engineers are authorised to do NTE extension socket swaps. The fastest way for them to install it for you would be to crimp through the back of the master in the cupboard and fit the new NTE and SSFP at that point

@varkanoid
Yes Openreach have taken on 250 apprentices for MI (managed installs (aka FTTC)) and they are fast track in practical training. Now if your engineer is an apprentice he will have had 15 weeks of intense training (a total of 6 weeks away from home intotal) as well as 9 weeks of buddying and in the field training. He clearly is a moron who didnt use initive.

TOALL: DO NOT PUT HH3 ONTOP OF VDSL MODEM!!!!
The VDSL modem must be either wall mounted or not be in a place where heat build up it likely or it has a high chance of failure

@happy_2008

I have had both, Frankly Virgin have a lot of good outer package but if things go slightly wrong or you happen to like downloading things a lot then they have archaic traffic management (aka 75% speed reduction for being a heavy user)
BT infinity has no p2p 4-12 weekdays and 9-12 (am-pm) weekends. Simple and no other throttles exsist

Its up to you

@cp88
AFAIK
Older adsl FUP: 120gb
Current adsl fup: 150gb
VDSL infinity fup: 300gb

DISCLAIMER: out of all my information this is my weakest please if you know better then advise me else this is what I believe the fups to be.

@bingham67
Yup FTTC will be avalioable in 80/20 flavours near the end of this year/ early 2012 (p.s. if you are currently sad about waiting for FTTC by the time you get it it will have been already installed in 5 million homes with lots of feedback and information to make it better so it is worth the wait)

@cp88 again
(ha just got your username i think:P)
Would not be sure about it being a replacement for the 40/10 flavour, but now I have second thoughts unless you pm me otherwise

It says 'replaced' so upgrade.

This is incorrect, if you read the whole article it replaces the 40/15Mbps,

It's important to stress that this news does not affect existing 40Mbps/2Mbps or 40Mbps/10Mbps products, which are offered by most FTTC supporting ISPs ( e.g. BT-Infinity ) and will not be withdrawn.. yet.

Most people on here are on 40/10 or 40/2

Infinity has no FUP. I can't comment on ADSL as I don't know.

just came back home after a weekend away to find the internet access very poor. 3mb download speed.

This is over wireless so not sure whether this is the cause.

Sooner I get an ethernet cable hooked up the better but you don't expect these sort of speeds after 3 days despite the "bedding in" period !

Hey Varkanoid, have you tried turniong smart wireless off and then checking speed? whats the speed like wireless atm?

yeah I did that already. It got better as the evening went on. I have used Inssider to check the channels of nearby wifi connections and changed mine to a vacant one too. Was getting about 26mbps but I am going to install ethernet cable from downstairs modem to upstairs where PC's are to get full speed.

Also noticed BT FON was turned on wondered what that was. Found out and disabled it.

What kind of 802.11 adaptor are you using? I had a argument with a guy about why his wireless would not work at the "144mB" that his n adaptor linked up at, I said it was cause usb 2.0 has a max of 30mB/per second right?
