Is this a scam?

Basically the phone rings and recorded message plays, with a woman claiming to have a text message and reads out a number the message is from. Then she says to listen to the message press one. I didn't get time to hear the number properly as i was half asleep so i can't check if it's a friends number. I've never heard of this before and it seems suspicious, i'm worried if i press one to listen it is going to connect me to a premium rate line. Can anybody shed any light on this for me?

I have had the same sort of thing - except that if I ignored it, I would get a call some time later - VERY annoying. The message included reference to an 0800 number which I called and got the service switched off. I think that this Link describes the service - from which you seem to have to 'opt out'?

Isn't it a standard BT service these days?

You can send a text to a landline and if the recipient's phone doesn't handle text messages, it gets converted to a voice message for them.

Indeed it is. They used to use the guy from little britan as the voice. I had great fun with that :)

Had two calls from it, my sister took one and i took the other. I remember the number starting 087, i have a few people with numbers starting 087, one being my nanna who is quite likely to try and text a land line :p if it rings again i'll get the full number.

Yes.

If you think its a scam send your land line a test text from your mobile and if the announcment is the same then it's most likely genuine.

Ah it's all fine, turns out my sisters friend sent a text to the house by accident. These scammers have got me paranoid.

Does it start with some cheesy trumpets? If so its the BT service. I found it terribly amusing for about thirty seconds to text everyone's landlines 'All your base are belong to us' in the amusing robot voice.

I like the fanfare when you answer the call. *PARP PARP PARP PAAARP"

Also, I like sending a message like

"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.... Me Hearties"

to my mates.

It's hella funny (because it sounds like a pirate woman).

Also, you can change the "Me Hearties" bit to anything pirate related.
