Ok so completely new to the building side of pc's but something I've wanted to do for a long time and something I've followed for quite a while so decided to start the process. I've spec'd something up but could do with some guidance and advice.

1.Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Motherboard (Socket AM3+, Up to 16GB DDR3, USB 3.0, uATX) - £41.87

2. OCZ OCZ-ZS550W-UK 550W ZS Series 550W 80+ Bronze PSU with 135mm Fan & single +12V Rail - £41.54

3. Kingston Technology KHX13C9B1B/4 HyperX Series 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 CL9 DIMM Memory Module - Black - £18.49

4.Cooler Master RC-430-KWN1 Elite 430 Midi Tower with Window - Black - £36.96

5 . AMD FX6300 Black Edition 6 Core (3.5/4.1GHz, 8MB Level 3 Cache, 6MB Level 2 Cache, Socket AM3+, 95W, Retail Boxed) - £86.04

6. Western Digital 1TB internal Hard Drive - Caviar Blue (3.5 inch) £49.29

7. LG ELECTRONICS GH24NS95 LG (24X) DVD Rewriter SuperMulti with M-DISC Support (Internal) £17.35

Only thing I was undecided on was graphics card and not sure if I need extra case fans and a CPU cooler?

Computer will be used for general Internet usage, photo and video storage and gaming.

Haven't really set a budget but trying to spend as little as possible and will buy the parts every week or so.

Any help appreciated.

The ram I specified I was unsure about but it was a cheap price but may cancel the order and the motherboard I specified I have already purchased but can return it if necessary but wasn't sure if it was would be ok for what I need it for?

the ram you chose will be fine for the internet and streaming, it will be the games depending what you play that will cause you some lag.

just read the bottom bit (should really stop skimming), whats the overall budget? and we will see what we can knock up for you.

I think ill cancel that one and go with something a bit more powerful, slightly concerned about the motherboard now. Should I send if back and go for something better or will this be ok?

I don't really have a budget but I can only really afford to buy parts every week or so when I've got some spare cash but I can't afford really expensive parts.

i would send it back , ok in that case i would get somthing like this and the other stuff you selected

If you are looking for a motherboard to go for your FX chip, listen to what teppic says, he knows where its at!

Why are people specing that old school extreme 3 for fx chips when it was never designed to take anything more than a quad core. Even the phenom ii hex cores were throttling them at stock. Not only is the phasing on that board low, the quality of those VRMs are infamous for giving up on fx chips. Teppic, throw that list of throttling motherboards into this thread too!

I would have OP choice in board over the Extreme 3. After a while though, you would still probably end up with an extra paperweight for your desk. Go for the Evo if you are on budget. If you play games like battlefield and crysis, i would even stretch to an 8320 and get the cooler another time if the budget is low.

The problem with AMD sticking with AM3+ is that there are loads of boards not really suited to the 8 core parts, or overclocking the 6 core parts. You're completely ok with all Asus AMD boards over £100 (even for the 5GHZ 9590), and with the 970 EVO R2.0 you should get 4.5-4.8GHz stable without much fuss.

For upcoming games the 8320 is a great buy, especially as they now clock very high (at first they tended to overclock far worse than the 6300s).

Another interesting point is that when you overclock them they give more than a linear increase in performance. This is because current games (even multithreaded ones) rely heavily on one core, and that one simply cannot keep up with the remaining cores in some games, with that stuck at 100% and the other 5 or 7 sitting at 30-40%. So when you overclock, it has more freedom to make the other cores do more work too. The next gen engines will work differently, aiming to use all the cores equally as much as possible.

Thanks for the advice, very helpful.

Gonna send the motherboard back and get the Evo R2.0 and might stick with the amd fx 6300 and possibly upgrade in the future of possible. Have also canceled the ram I had originally ordered and will get something more powerful when i can.

Will pick up the gpu, hard drive and os when funds are avaliable.

Currently seen a Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 Motherboard (AMD 970, SB950, DDR3, S-ATA 600, ATX, 2 x eS-ATA, 2 x USB 3.0, Socket AM3+) for the price of £77.79.

Worth going for it or is that the best price I'm gonna see?
