Hi all,

It's been a long time since upgrading so I'm looking at taking advantage of Black Friday offers with the below build.

My questions are mainly:
  • Any better MOBO options for around £350 and below?
  • Any better memory options?
  • Any other advice? :D
Thank you!

nice build.
the psu been £139.99 for awhile now at another well known site. otherwise the new NZXT psu's have good write ups.. the 1200W C1200 atx3.0 is £134.99, or the newer atx3.1 version is £159.98(though even reviewer says just get the atx3.0 version as basically the same). It's basically on a par with the msi psu..pips it 1 place higher in performance, but irrelevant difference. only other mob i can thnk of is the x870 tomahawk for £265 slightly cheaper or the asrock X870E nova wifi, which is £320
other than that, some people going 64gb ram. I didn't, but some are. £195 will get corsair non rgb 6000c30, or the kingston fury 6000c30, £5 more if you want rgb, which guessing not
Fractal case isn't the deepest and can only fit a 240mm aio in top(for guide for size as you going air). Fractal brought out the XL case as a result which gives the extra length(so basically gives you 360mm capability in roof.. basically increases gpu length from 330mm(300mm with from rad) to 413mm(380mm with 33mm from rad)..so should give better airflow around bigger gpu's

so basically nothing wrong, just possible tweaks which you've probably seen/discounted. enjoy the build

Thank you! That's all really useful actually.

I'll have a gander at the NZXT PSU's and the ASRock X870E was the other MOBO I was looking at so will look a bit closer at that.

Reading a bit on the cases, some people mention the build quality of the XL isn't as good but guess it's a sacrifice for better airflow.

Aren't X870 boards the same as X670? That's what I heard, so I guess if you can get X670 cheaper then look at them, also B650 will work as the build above and likely even cheaper if it has all the features you want.

Ah interesting, I hadn't heard that. I'm not requiring USB4 for anything (yet).

Any B650E that you would recommend? The Asrock B650E Taichi seems to be most recommended but also fairly expensive?

I usually just recommend a board like the ASRock X870 Pro RS because they're price competitive with B650E and the Pro RS did decently (thermally) in HUB's X870 roundup. There are lots of owners of the Strix B650E-E/B650E-F here and the only complaint I'm aware of is the dodgy Intel LAN.

X870 is a B650E , though on some boards like the tomahawk not only do you get the cie5 gpu, but 2 of the m.2 are pcie5 speed...all the b650E boards I know of only have 1 pcie5 m.2 (could be wrong)
X870E is X670E so you'l get the extra lanes..and remember the x670e chipset is basically 2 b650 chipsets stuck together
don't think b650 non e exists anymore in the new lineup

prob is b650e boards are pretty much same price as some x870 boards (b650e-f is £230/ e-e board now £260), so why bother going b650e now. might as well benefit from usb4.wifi7...even if you don't use them, might get a bit more come selling time, or at least make it more desirable that someone picks the x870 over the b650e

B650E-E Strix has 2, but the second uses graphics card lanes. Most X870 boards can't offer 2x PCI-E M.2 slots from the CPU because they use 4 lanes for USB4, the Tomahawk does this too, but it knocks them both (USB4 ports and the M.2 slot) to 2 lane each.

ah yes...having a b650e-e board myself i should have remembered that. just remembered can take 4 m.2;s but put in slot 3 you share the lanes with the gpu, so basically avoid if getting the latest and greates gpu...not really a problem for me at mo, as only using the one slot with a gen4 drive anyway

from https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-X870-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/Specification looks like the slot 1 and 2 m.2 slots are both pcie5 and are direct to the cpu, so no interference with the gpu lanes

Cheers. Looks a great spec but would prefer a black mobo if you're aware of something similar?

The cheaper ones at OCUK are Gigabyte models, but they were near (or at the bottom) of HUB's thermal testing.

ASRock's Riptide performed better, but since that's £245 there's not a big saving to be made on your original choice or the Tomahawk that Craig_d1 suggested. Realistically, the thermal performance of 'cheap' boards would be fine with the CPU you're getting (test was a 9950X running Cinebench), but the results may still put you off.

The ASRock Pro RS has a decent VRM with an 8-layer PCB, so I think that's why it does comparatively well for the money.

Gigabyte's Gaming (Gaming X is a different model) wasn't tested, but that has a significantly weaker VRM than the Eagle and the Eagle was at the bottom.

Can you get this board in black at all? Or is it just white?
no, just white but...

 yes...it's called the riptide wifi, and it'll cost you more or the steel legend if you want a different white, which will cost you more also, but not as much as the riptide more. for once going black mobo, prices are reversed and the black is more expensive so argument white costs more for colour is a load of tosh now.
really the riptide and steel legend are the same board except colour/graphics(ie looks)..the backplate i/o are identical. but looking at all 3 together, save vrm, vrm temp, pciex16 m.2, sattaIII, usb4.0..only diff riptide/SL has10 usb3.2 and 8 usb 2, whereas the rs wifi has 7 usb3.2 and 9 usb 2.00...rs has 1 less fan header too
