Hi chaps,

I've been gaming with an clan mate of mine for a number of years now and it has come to the day he now plays more PS3 then PC.. this is mainly down to his computer being semi-old and not being capable of running the latest FPS games. I wont tell you his specs cos even i know its not good enough anymore.. the good news is he has a 1080p screen so that can be re-used. I'm wanting him to get back into pc gaming but i need a super bang for buck pc build to present to him, so i can convince him.

I've come up with this.. let me go through the pros and cons of what i think. I chose that CPU because its fairly futureproof and pretty much the same price as the cheapest i5. Also the motherboard is capable of sata 6Gb/s so that SSD will really come into play (serious performance boost). The only problem is have i skimped too hard on the graphics card? I'm trying to keep the price down as much as possible but i dont want to be to harsh on the choice of premium components.

questions are..

1. Does it look ok?
2. SSD sata 6Gb/s good idea?
3. Better graphics card?

Opinions Welcome. Thanks Lads.

I think you've skimped too much on the card. Especially for a big 1080p screen. If he's just gaming then I wouldn't bother with an SSD. Sure, they offer amazing performance, but I wouldn't recommend one on a £750 budget.

I'd put the money towards a 5850 or better, to take advantage of the screen. But that's just my opinion :p It depends whether you think he'd be more impressed with super fast boot times for windows and a game or two, or better graphics.

Okay honestly I would downgrade the processor to a 955BE, and get a HDD instead of an SSD. With this spare cash I would then opt for either:
5850
or 5770 xfire.

EDIT: looking at that board it doesn't say it supports xfire. So I would just go for a 5850. They're pretty good cards and if you get a decent one you can OC it to the power of a 5870.

£15 a core though man.. no brainer! He does like to use some video editing programs too so i think it will be handy for that. I know i could save there but its only a marginal saving.

AM2 coolers can fit AM3 coolers. I have the artic cooler in my brother's system, and it looks a bit small to keep the X6 cool enough at max load.

£10 more than the last build but 180gb more hdd space and a much better cpu cooler

(i do think the hex core is overkill though so maybe swapping down to a 955 to save a few bob would be a good idea)

I like it :P and theres nothing wrong with cheap overkill. Why motherboard change better RAM option?

Anyone can improve on this? cause this is looking pretty good :D
