after a long time running my i5 2500k I’m finally looking to upgrade, I’m going for a full set up as the current machine is still running and so will go to my mrs to keep using and I’ll upgrade its cpu and mb later in the year.

Budget is around 1500 up to a max of 2k (if I can get away with that) and I use the machine for gaming - mostly mmo’s, a bit of FPS such as vermintide, civ 6, fallout 4, elite. it’s also used for photo editing using Lightroom and photoshop cc and does some heavy work on that.

I’ve been out of the upgrade scene for ages and all I really know is that I’d like an Amd gfx card as I’ve already got a nice free sync monitor. Not sure if an intel cpu or Ryzen will be best so over to you experts.

Thanks all

Gfx prices are high...what’s the deal with those? Is it just the way things have gone?

With the Gfx card taking so much budget is the rest of the build being compromised or would you still recommend those parts even if Gfx prices were cheaper?

@noj for my build, there's no compromise. Except that you're paying about £80-100 more for the ram and £70-100 more for the graphics card in comparison to reasonable prices.

The only thing possibly, is which function takes precedence, gaming Vs productivity...whether you go intel 8700k Vs ryzen...
The intel 8700k would be slightly out of budget given the ram and GPU price increase currently though, unless you skimp on the HDD space

I can say as fact that the Vega 56 is double the price it should be. Avoid.

@lee32uk oh wow, didn't realise that 8700k would be slightly better compared to ryzen for adobe productivity...hmm...

Who cares about NAS? Aren't there 7200 RPM NAS drives, too?
of course there are, but one has to compromise whilst working within a budget...

NAS for home....... this world completely got insane.
when op is trashing his hdd with read/writes, i presume that he would want one with reliability that's rated better than a bog standard hdd...

I have no responsibility for these additional charges.
you, however, if you're speccing, have a responsibility to spec appropriately. it is someone elses money after all, go somewhere else if you want to troll.

The OP has a Freesync monitor and he explicitly stated he wants an AMD GFX.
adaptive sync is not an issue if you have a graphics card (like a 1080ti) that can run high framerates...sigh...
and yes, i am using a 1080ti with a freesync monitor, so speaking from experience
again, as above, if you're speccing, you have a responsibility to spec appropriately

@noj cat claws and curling tongs aside, this would probably be my revised spec...slightly more expensive and you lose 1 of the two 2tb hdds though (and the compactness of matx form factor).
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,038.87 (includes shipping: £0.00)

@tamzzy thanks for taking the time on this and useful info on the Gfx card vs free sync I guess I’d not considered that a better performing Gfx card for the same amount as a card that would support free sync was an option.

Re hard drives, yes I want something reliable with decent read/write speeds that isn’t going to fall over it 18 months. Ultimately budget is something for me to worry about and I’m fortunate that the budget is really more of a guideline around what I am comfortable spending. So going a little over for the right spec isn’t a worry. If I get as many years out of the system as I have with my current build it is well worth the upfront cost.

It is nice to recommend more reliable drives but we have no such practice at all here. This is maybe the first time when we actually have it in a configuration.
I think the normal 3TB Toshiba P300 drive is also very good.

speak for yourself lol
when someone says they need it as a workstation build, i 99% spec either wd red/gold (or dare i say it...seagate enterprise drives)

1080ti is not just a better graphics card, it absolutely trounces a vega 56 to the tune of ~50%
(for an extra £100 at current prices, its a no brainer really)
vega 56 is at best, a £350 card...when prices are not so crazy...

There is a strong reason for this price and it is that the Vega 56 performs very well in Mining, and that's why it has high demand for this purpose.
