Build suggestions!

Nice one lead ;)

Core 2 Quad Q8300
4GB Ram

and a graphics card which i'm unsure about.

Surely with those specs, a good cooler, an overclock, and a new graphics card will suffice?

Personally, if I had that setup I would grab some watercooling, stick it on 4ghz, and buy a 6950

*edit* maybe not 4ghz, but something.

if im honest, 4gb of 800mhz ram is still pretty good, if you up it to 8gb of 800mhz then theres really nothingwrong with it to be honest.

i see now that your core 2 quad is only 2ghz, so it depends on what that cpu is capable of, and indeed if your bios supports overclocking.

The graphics card is really not worth it, but i truly believe that you should ask around on the forum a little more about upgrading your current components before you commit to a full upgrade.

Just my opinion though. Personally that is what i would do, but then that is me, and this is you :)

If I do that, this build is still ancient and will not last that long really? I'd have to upgrade it next year at least.

I'm looking for a build which is gonna last me 3-4 years with some other minor upgrades. If it means spending a bit of money then so be it. I will probably sell my current tower and the components inside of it. So hopefully that will yield some money back.

Thanks anyway Acme.

ok don't worry then :)

but the core 2 quad isnt very far at all behind a phenom 2 quad core in terms of performance, and with a nice overclock it could potentially be better, but i see your intentions now :p

But I'm going for the i5 2500k? :P

And thanks, what do you think of the build I've shown above? Any suggestions?

I know, sorry I was just comparing it to a current gen cpu :p

The build looks good :)

And a core 2 quad and 4gb ddr2 is hardly ancient :p

I have a pc with a 1ghz solo core and 256mb or ram :p that's closer to ancient :D

All I was thinking was if you were to buy just a graphics card and some watercooling, it would last you another year or two, and then you could use the same watercooling (maybe the card as well) when you build the new pc, and in a year or a couple of years time, there will be sandybridge-e and bulldozer, maybe another gen after, certainly radeon 7000 series, maybe 8000 or even 9000 series etc.

:p

Though when I think about it, selling the c2q rig and buying now is just as good an option I spose.

My excuse is that I'm tired :D

Night all... gotta be up at 7

The only thing I will say quickly is that it would probably be wiser to get a z68 board because of the fixes, new features, ivybridge compatibility etc etc, and some can be had for that price anyway

Hi again,

I've just been going over my parts before I order and noticed this:

HIS ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with DIRT3 & Deus Ex PC Games

This one is £131.99 whilst -

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE DIRT3 & Deus Ex PC Games

Is £154.99 but the specs are exactly the same? Would I be wise in buying the HIS version just because of the price?

Other than that, some last comments on my final build suggestions:

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail with FREE TrackMania 2 Canyon PC Game £173.99
(£144.99) £173.99
(£144.99)
MSI P67A-G45 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard ** B3 REVISION ** £89.98
(£74.98) £89.98
(£74.98)
XFX Pro 650W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £64.99
(£54.16) £64.99
(£54.16)
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) £30.98
(£25.82) £30.98
(£25.82)

Should I replace that MSI Mobo with the MSI Z68A-G45-B3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard for future proofing? For only £15 more.

PSU and HDD are fine in my opinion, and of course the lovely 2500k.

Opinions absolutely wanted.

Get the cheapest 6870, or get the cheapest 560ti. Or splurge out for a 6950 2GB. It all depends on your budget. Just put a budget up and stick with it really.

So many motherboards... My pick would be Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 at that price range.

EDIT : Yeah if you have a PCP&C 910W, no need for another PSU.

Ahh, sorry. Forgot to mention I didn't manage to grab that PSU. A friend of a friend already sold it :(

Is the 6870 a good solid card though? I'm going to go with the MSI P67A-G45 Intel P67 as it seems like the best choice for me right now.
