I am looking to build my own NAS, probably using freenas. I want as small a case as possible for this.
Ideally I am looking at a case able to store 5-8 hard drives. Does any1 have any suggestions?

Also what would you recommend for good 5-8 port raid controller?

IcyDock do a 5 into 3 hotswap SATA enclosure so pretty much any case with 3 5.25" bays would fit the bill, you'll probably get another 2 or 3 3.5" bays on a case that size too.

Depending on budget & performance requirements I wouldn't necessarily bother with a RAID card, there are plenty of motherboards out there with 6-8 SATA ports.

Any micro-ATX case will normally hold 1 or 2 5.25 drives and 2 or 3 3.5 drives.
Brackets can be purchased or made that can add extra drives.
My Asus V3 barebones can take up to 8 drives using some brackets.

I always thought a raid card was best as if the motherbaord dies you would lose everything but if a raid card died, simply replacing it would allow you to reconstruct the raid?

Seems brackets are the way forward then :)

You could just replace the motherboard, or if its an intel controller, get a newer intel motherboard and it should still work okay (mine did from ICH5 to ICH9).
