Builders noise.

Rather than people feeling sorry for themselves because of the noise why not feel sorry for the poor buggers who are having to work rather than have a lie in.

I work long weeks a lot of the time too mate, and have done so for about 14 years, so i'm not randomly and blindly "feeling sorry for myself". I simply think that the time they began the heavy works today was a complete micky-take.

I can't even politely ask them to keep it down, they don't speak English.

How do you know they dont speak english? I doubt there are many builders in the uk who dont. Just because they dont to one another doesn't mean they can't.

You seem to think that I make random and baseless assumptions, my fault though, I should have been crystal clear sooner. I apologize.
One of my other neighbours (English) went out in the garden to have a word with the builders when the noise kicked off, and the workmen were just shrugging their shoulders, making hand gestures and speaking back to him in their own language. That leads me to make the (reasonable) assumption that they either cannot speak English, or were faking the whole thing.
I hope that clears it up.

If it wasn't for noisey builders we would all be living in tents and peeing in to buckets.

You can always ask them to try and avoid making noise early on a Saturday. If you don't say anything, how are they to know it is causing a problem?

You really haven't read through the thread, have you? ;)

Oh well, whatever.. I am always in a minority it seems by expecting people to behave reasonably and considerately.

Don't worry, i'm with you. Hell, I still hold doors open for people and offer my seat up if someone less fortunate than me needs it, Christ I must be old-school!! :D

Yes I have. I think that someone there must speak English! If not the guys on site, their boss must speak English. If they're Polish, it is highly likely they can speak English. There are plenty of Polish construction workers where I live and every one of them speaks English.

Yes I have.

So you saw the part where I mentioned that my another neighbour tried to ask them to keep it down, and failed miserably because they either couldn't speak English or were deliberately faking it?

More likely deliberately faking it. Someone who speaks very poor English can usually understand quite a lot of what's being said.

May be it would be possible to contact the owner of the property?

That's the weird thing (and I really should find out more), I don't know where they are. It's an elderly brother and sister, one lives on the ground floor and the other lives upstairs. I've lived next to them, and spoken on friendly terms with them, for most of my life but without a word they seemed to have moved out and the house is being gutted and rebuilt.

I feel bad when making loud noise at the weekend. Had a job today that i didn't start till 9am just to give people that extra time in bed. I Was taking this 45' tree down to a more suitable size for its spot making a lot of noise with 2-3 chainsaws going at once. Fortunatly we decided that we weren't going to take a chipper or people would have complaned. People were more interested in watching than complaning the people next door were watching me rather than the TV.

Clearly you're a person with consideration and respect for others, and that's just how it should be. :)

Quick update on this.
The work has been ongoing since I left this thread, and things have gotten worse.

The blokes have been staying progressively longer each evening, last night (friday) they stopped with the power tools at 7pm.
This evening, they stopped at 7.20pm. Now, I have been in contact with the noise officers at my council and have been informed that the acceptable hours for noisy constructions works are:

Monday - Friday: 0800 - 1800.
Saturday: 0800 - 1300.
Sunday: No work noise allowed at all.

The workers have been completely disregarding the weekend regulations from day 1, and have started going past the weekday regulations too. I have been told to keep a record from now on of work times and vehicle license plates.

I just want to make it crystal clear that I have NO problem at all with people working, or builders' works going on, but it has to be at reasonable times.

I don't know, they didn't want to say too much by the sound of it. I was told to phone back tomorrow if ANY work noise comes from the place.
