Basically my current system wont cut it on medieval 2, although i though it would.

but here is my current spec.

x2 3800
2gb corsair
8800gts 640mb
dfi expert sli
600 watt noise taker

here is what i am after from overclockers.

e6600 core 2 duo
dfi 975 motherboard
2 x 512 ddr2 corsair memory

but here is what i am unsure about!

will the upgrade be worth it? Is there a big difference in processor power between the e660 and x2 3800?

very surprised to hear this. The game must be running CPU limited than because it sure wouldnt be the GPU and you have plenty of RAM. Unless something else is causing a slow down.. Perhaps trying overclocking your CPU to see if that improves things a little? The E6600 is a faster CPU sure.. but I would have thought the 3800 would have been fine

wtf, your system should work with that with ease, is it oc'd? It would also help if they made total war multi threaded to run the ai better.

I would stick with what you got mate. It beats mine lol.

Thats what i thought!!!!!! No, its not over clocked, strange eh?

i am limited to 4040 troops, after that severe lag. If i push 5000 troops i get about 10 FPS, and i am not exaggerating!

I have tried everything, i have tried disabling a core, and then tried amd`s optimisation!

Does anyone think it would be worth trying a single core processor?

Oh i got the impression of that the game wouldn't run at all silly me :)

Medival is a more cpu intensive game then most so going single core over dual core no chance.

single core won't work anybetter, its just people think it does because they think that a x2 3800 is like havin 2 3800s, its not, its clocked lower, if you overclocked your cpu you would get better results, heck i can only get 1k troops in rome lol. You really do not need to upgrade, your system is more than enough.

Yeh, so why the hell do i get terrible lag, and why am i limited to 4040 troops, while other people out there can surpass that on lower specs?

Hey man we are all trying to help cut us some slack, Thanks :)

Anyway have you actully red people running that particular game and on a much lower system spec than yourself?

no , i wasnt having a go at you there.

well someone just told me there

"I have a 3800+ X2 with 2GB of matched RAM and a 7600GT and run this game on Huge unit settings with maximum detail and the best textures, all with little or no problem. Try getting rid of shadows."

Here is what i am thinking of going for

1 X INTEL CORE2DUO E6300 DUAL CORE RETAIL
2 X 512MB TEAM DDR 800 PC6400
1 X GIGABYTE 965P-S3 MOTHERBOARD

how does this compare to what i have?

1 x x2 3800
2 x 1gb corsair ddr 400
1 x dfi expert sli

You'll see a nice boost in performance there. A good choice of parts.

I very much doubt it, especially as he is halving the RAM he has. What hard drives do you have and have you tried a reinstall of your operating system recently?

i'm not the most experienced on here by far but i have played the game on friend's PC. Not sure of his spec but i can guarantee his graphics card was not even close to yours and he seemed to be fine at over 4500 men.

you could try closing unecessary processes and/or turning the detail down a little to see if that makes any difference but I am quite surprised at that. normally its the gfx card that is responsible for any lag rather than the CPU and that surely isnt the case with your gfx card

Its the cpu that'll slow down with first with that many people not the graphics card. The CPU will have to deal with AI's and all that malarky where as the gfx card just has to make everything look nice.
