Hi folks,

Can anyone recommend a mobo and CPU for low pwoer consumption? I have everything else but stuck on deciding which of these to go for?

Are they all pretty similar with onboard gfx? Are Pentium dual cores any good power consumption-wise?

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Cheers,

Paul.

Stay away from the Pentium dual cores. I'd say your best bet is to go with the low voltage core 2 duos, or if you really want ultra low power consumption (and corresponding slower speed) then you might want to consider the Intel Atom.

All processors will have a power rating on their datasheets on the manufacturers website.

When I built my homes server I had 2 options, ultra low power consumption of an Intel Atom CPU (around 2W IIRC) but they are normally on a fixed board with limited expandadbility (ie 1 PCI port, 2 SATA ports) but for that power rating it mihgt be worth it.

The option I went with was an AMD 4850e which runs at 45W. my entire system runs at about 60W most of the time. Would be nice to underclock it a bit but Im limited by the motherboard.

I'm using an atom for my freenas server.

depends on what you are going to use the server for.

+1

low power athlon 4850e or 5050e and undervolt it down to 0.9V and underclock it to 1Ghz. If you use it with a good quality gigabyte board with the 2oz of copper (their ultra durable range) and some green low power HDD's then you should be able achieve a decent power saving..

Have settled on an Ion based Atom system...just deciding whether to build my own or to go for something like Acer's R3600 and just add on USB drives. Linux install as it's not actually needing to play any content just run server apps and be on 24/7 :) From a review it uses around 20-25W when powered on with a 160GB drive.
