Building gaming PC - any specific tips?

holy moley..hadn't looked at ddr4 in awhile..ooophhh..guess it#'ll keep creeping up now...is ddr4 still being made or has everyone switched to ddr5 manufacturing now...ahh, just lloked it up...micron still making but only for the next 6 months or so then stopping production completely..that was from tomshardware a couple of weeks ago...that'll def put the price up then

Ah so my theory was right then, I'm lucky due to DLSS, but hey, if it works it works :)
FWIW, I set it to quality, and everything maxed out graphically, use reflex where possible, and frame generation as needed.

Sorry to highjack the thread, but, I have 32gb ram, and have never seen a game use over 16GB?
Is this something that you've experienced personally?
just catching up on the thread..sorry, been off as son visiting on hol, so being off pc awhile
to agree with @Gray2233 , yes, I've also played games using more than 16gb ram. current rig I haven't checked tbh. i rebuilt but decided I didn't want to mix work with gaming, so just ordered a 2nd ssd to stick all the game libraries on
but the system i took apart for my son was a b650e/32gb6000c30/7800x3d combo and I was running a 3070ti on it..just been having a quick look on any photo's I took, and see playing flight sim I used 17-19gb ram...had hogwarts and was 22gb utilised...and i'm running on 4k with dlss..plenty others below though (returnal was using 8gb during the benchmark run for example)...why i don't recommend more than 32gb at mo, unless you specifically want to play the 2/3 games that require it (and generally you'll know that before building your rig..anyone just want normal games, 32gb more than enough..imho)
one thing hu did recently though was looking what happenned to ram with the 8gb card..don't know if you saw it, but ram useage would go up if the vram of the gpu was maxed out, as the pc would start to use some of the ram to help
and on that also, going from 8gb card to the 9070xt i have now(tried it before taking mobo etc apart), even though i could play games(I was playing avatar no problem at 4k with dlss even though hu said it was unplayable), switching to the 9070xt, suddenly the textures etc were far superior...dlss must have really dropped the upscaling to get anything playable
anyway, so although you can play with 16gb ram etc, it's sub optimal...same goes for 8gb vram on gpu's...it's not until to upgrade do you notice the massive increase in picture quality with textures etc

one thing i just remebered...my pc i build back in 2020 is a am4 5800X with a 3080fe. My son was a massive fortnite player back then, but he ended up switching back to playing it on the xsx, as he always said it was stuttery playing on the pc..there are fix's now apparently if you google...so if you find it stutters, just be aware of that (seems every new season comes out stuttering a little)

On the RAM thing, I built an mATX second PC a couple of years ago and used 16GB of DDR4 which I already had. Expected to upgrade if necessary but haven't needed to. Recently played through latest Assassin's Creed with no issues.

Seeing more than 16GB being used when you have 32GB is expected, because Windows is smart enough to use RAM that's available. That's not the same thing as it being required though.

Haha, no need to be sorry dude :)
Ah flight sims, that's the 1 game I totally forgot and am well aware of being a ram hog, so that makes total sense. Along with large scale city building. I don't play either to be honest. Wouldn't mind getting back into RTS again to be fair though!
Interesting, wasn't Hogwarts a bit of a hot mess from what I've heard - or is it fixed now?
Yeah I kind of feel like 32GB was a waste, but 'it's there now so' factor means I haven't got to worry, I nearly considered 64GB for future proofing, but I'm glad I didn't
That makes perfect sense, so you're saying that DLSS might be sneakily adjusting the quality despite me setting it at quality and maxing out the settings - clever if so :)
