I might be going to Bulgaria for 2 weeks in the summer as my parents are looking to buy an apartment or 2 over there instead of carrying on with their pensions as they will end up getting more back renting the apartments out than keeping with the pensions. Has anyone from here been there as I have no idea what to expect when I go over, except for the fact that food and alcohol is cheap and the women are quite tasty :D

the women are not that hot compared to other EE girls but esy to get one :D

But i think bulgaria isnt the best place to live the rest of your days , i mean villages are really primitive , give us more details about where these appartments are although i fear you are only interested in the girlie part :D

I have a friend that has purchased a number of properties in Sofia.

To all intents and purposes, it sounds like a nice place.

The apartments are only for renting out to be used at holiday villas for other people, they aren't going to retire there, afaik they'll be going America for that.

I'm interested in the cheap food, cheap beer and hopefully cheap ladies :D

He he where did you go?

we went around various places cant remember the name exactly, the top class hotels where poor, like furniture painted black? food was rubbish my bed was a pull out sofa in a 4/5* hotel, no thanks

I thought is a lot better now. Is it not?
EDIT: Went to a lot of places on the Black Sea. Wasn't bad. Espeacialy the south coast.

Used to live in Romania (on the Black Sea) 12 years ago and that was ok, a bit corrupt and Bulgaria seemed like a paradise compared. Went to Bulgaria skiing over the new year and it was ok, cheap beer but they have got the hang of taking tourists (western) for a ride.

Watch the prices go up as you enter the resteraunt! Was a good holiday and everyone seemed friendly (except for the £%$£^ that stole my phone). Loads of people are investing in properties and there is a massive amount of building going on!

Lived in Sofia for 5 years between '96 and '01, between the ages of 8 and 13. Here are just a few of my experiences in a random order.
It's dirty and cheap. I went out on a pub crawl with my brother and his friend when he was about 15 and I was 9, got served everywhere!
Fags are cheap, my brother bought lots and sold them when he got back to school in England.
Lots of bootleg stuff if you're into it. Don't know the best places anymore, but they're not too hard to find.
Hotels/restaurants are pretty poor. We stayed in the Sheraton while my dad was looking for a house, and it was nothing like a 4/5* hotel should be. Restaurants aren't great, but they're damn cheap. We went out for a chinese very often (my mum is chinese), although it wasn't the nicest food it cost a tenner for the four of us to eat until we were full.
If you spot guys with stalls that sell pumpkin seed-esque things, they're well nice. As are the little sticks of honeycomb that you can buy, but watch out cause they get extremely messy and sticky. And remember to spit out the wax after chewing it!
Skiing is really cheap, really really really cheap. We got myself and my brother instruction from a guy who spoke passable english for something like 10$/day. Mind you the prices might be a bit higher now due to inflation, and Bulgaria becoming a slightly more modern country.
LAN cafes are cheap and fun. Get a couple of games of Starcraft going!

Surely you must know somebody over there before you jump in and buy a property. That would be my advise. You don't want to get stitched up, do you? Otherwaise I reckon Bulgaria is not a half bad as everyone says. There are a lot of british people too.
You'll be surprised by the girls over there IMHO :D
EDIT: It is a cheap and dirty country if you get stuck in Sofia. You reckon London is different?!

Well it will be the Black Sea area where they are buying the apartments and I've heard that it's a bit nicer there, so hopefully so should have a good laugh. I'm just thinking of the cheap knock offs I can buy. Plus if anything goes wrong I know a couple of Bulgarians so they may be able to help me out :)

My parents are going over during Easter to have a look around and see for themselves rather than taking the chance and buying blindly.

Give us a call. I'm thinking of going there this summer ;)

hmm Is there much English being spoken written in Bulgaria?

Or is it like Russia where you cant do anything unless you can read and write cyrillic?

Better not underestimate the language barrier.

Hum....english is not an official language overe there you know :D

i was there a couple of years ago, and contrary to a few posts here it was fantastic! they are modernising a lot of the places around the black sea, i was in the Golden sands area, it was fantastic, the hotels were built not a month before we went! it was very clean, very cheap, food was fantastic. im planning on going back in a couple of years, see how much more has changed, as when i was there they were still building/modernising. i highly recommend it, only thing is the prostetutes at night, along the main street near the bonkers bar, some of them are scary! one of them tried to get me to get it on with them, you would have never seen me run away faster! :p

I didnt say it was ;)

My point is, if someone is considering going over there for a while then they need to learn the language IMO.
The state of the hotels and the quality of food is one thing, but if you cant complain then thats another :D

:p Not an easy language to learn ;) But I reckon you'll be all right over there. Most of the young people do speak decent english.

You have to find the good places to go, I was going around Romania in the early 90's and even though generaly things where pretty bad, if you know where to go you could get a very good time for nothing.

Of course most people here don't really know where to go, but please don't go there with the mentality of a British person, it's not Britain, yes they have a lot of work to do but they have some beautyfull beaches and good weather, so you better get a house in the seaside.

Think about it this way, the weather here is probably one of the worst in the Europe, thing won't change, however the Balkans are changing for the better, very, very fast so in 10 years time I would expect things to be perfect.

Also, chicks are nice and much slimmer than here :p
