Busted Hdd

Being an ham fisted bu55er I've just managed to break off the guide to the data transfer socket on a backup drive my old Q6600 PC :mad:

A stack of info on there I could really do with retrieving, I guess the drive is FUBAR from a long term point of view, but I'd be grateful if anyone can give some idea of an how to. BTW I've marked the bit I managed to break off.

I don't know what's going on with your picture and the deleted post but just post a picture (following the forum rules) and we can see what you've done and if there's a solution.

BTW I asked for the second post to be deleted, because I was convinced with the OP I'd sorted the pici problem out, however later on I took a second look and the pic was gone.

EDIT just found the rules thanks I can't figure what I'm doing wrong though the image is on Photo Bucket and < 800 pixels wide.

Could you glue a SATA data cable in place making sure the contacts on the HDD make a connection with the contacts inside the SATA cable?

If you're going to give it a go then try and use a glue which will be strong enough to hold it but not too strong in case you need to remove the cable if it doesn't make proper contact with the connectors the first time.

Maybe I've misinterpreted what you've said 2 posts up.

From your idea what I was intending to do is.

Remove the innards from the SATA plug cut this to the required shape and glue that to the inside the Hd socket to support the terminals also maybe glue the non conductive sides of the terminals too.

Am I on the right track here?

I was thinking you just glue the SATA cable "as is" making sure the connectors go properly into the SATA cable.

That's what they did in the link I posted above.

Surveyor just found what could have been a more robust idea, too late now though, I've glue it in and waiting for the jelly to set.

Apparently the plastic end can be prised off & replaced if you have a the same type of old drive available, I crushed one and slung it about a week ago.

The pic if I can get it to work this time, might be of use to someone else

A good idea if you have a spare HDD and the plastic part is exactly the same.

Have you tried your HDD yet with the SATA cable glued in?

Well it's glued in but must wait about 24 hours I had nothing other than the old fashioned Araldite, so will be left undisturbed in the loft, to keep Wifo from picking it up / putting it away in some fiendishly difficult place to ever find again, I'm sure you know what women are like, I've got almost 50 years of what have you done with etc etc behind me, the only safe place to put anything is the loft.

I'll update you though tomorrow

Plot 1 unfortunately failed on this occasion I've just been up the loft to check a couple of test glued parts, both Bulldog clips have slipped off the drive which retained the cable. :eek:

I must find a more reliable retaining mechanism tomorrow.

For me it's now to bed. So, good night all.

The most tricky part is stopping the Araldite in my case from running into the gap which allows access for the power supply lead TBH the best thing to do is tape it off, but I didn't. I sure I'll have another blooming question a bit later on.
