Having trouble with the wifes phone provider, she's 14 months into an 18 month contract and her handset is dying on a regular basis. :(

Turns off at random, doesn't show missed calls, etc (yes, it's a k850i) She's on her second handset as the screen on her first on packed up.

O2 say they won't help as the phone is outside it's 12 month warrenty so it's not their problem

Can i try the SOGA angle with the phone not being fit for use/purpose?

Damned annoying that they are tying her into an 18 month contract but not providing a phone that will last that long! But they have kindly said she's welcome to buy her way out of the contract for £100 (so she can pay the full cost of the rest of the contract but not get the use, brilliant idea!)

When my phone stopped working Orange wanted me to pay for a replacement or take out insurance, the insurance would then cover the replacement phone although I'd have to pay the insurance for the remainder of the contract. Might be worth finding out if O2 have a similar policy, you'd have to pay £7 or so a month extra but you'd get a replacement phone within a day or so and can cancel it all at the end of your contract.

The phone is covered for the life of the contract, I was sending my N73 back for free repair 16 months into a 18month contract.

Did you keep the receipt that came in the box with the phone? O2 state the the repair and returns guidelines on that .

I had the same problem with O2 and the K850, Sony's warranty in the UK is 24 months.

Just to update this one, we gave them a bit more earache and suddenly the phone was covered, yay!

Sent it off, came back a week later and still didn't work. :(

Sent it off again, a week later they send her a Nokia 6700c as a replacement, as they could get there prefered 7 day turnaround on repairs (not that the 850i is a festering turd of a phone or anything)

Is this nokia much good? Does the A-GPS need network coverage, or does it work as a standalone unit?

Any way of finding out the original build date of the phone they've sent out? (i know it will be a refurb, but by god it's shiney!)

Even better, her contract is up in about a week, so i think she'll be going sim only :)

A-GPS works in two basic ways.
1. Since the phone masts never move, the phone can get an approximate position from them.
2. It provides data about where to look for GPS satellites enabling a faster lock.

Interesting, I didn't realise that a: SE's warrenty was 2 years (good on them) and b: that your phone is covered for the life of your contract on O2(?).

May have to get rid of my insurance, which was there incase my phone broke 13 months into my 18 month contract. :)

Good good. :)

Does it simply ping the local masts for location data, or is it a "data call" to the network? IE is it going to cost a little bit every time she turns it on and it goes looking for it's current location?

Also, how do you find if the handset is network locked? We've been looking at going sim-only this time and tesco seem to have a nice offer. Then again tesco piggyback on the o2 network, so being locked shouldn't matter, should it?

Cheers.

if the handset doesn't have customised O2 firmware, then it's likely (but not definite) that it's unlocked.

A-GPS uses a small amount of data when its used... it'd be worthwhile investing in a small dataplan so that you don't get raped for using data without a plan! (up to £3 per MB on some networks!)
