... but are you still proud?

A minor error; but still I'm waiting for anyone to post legitimate reasons of why our country is worse to live in than it was in the past.

Perhaps we could have a whip-round for your fare. That way the rest of us could get on with trying to make the country a better place, while you rats can go elsewhere (and no doubt complain about whatever poor country you decide to infest).

And you call me a "rat" based on what ? That I have an opinion.. please if you want to discuss my opinion feel free but lets have an adult discussion..

Law and order are worse. I was watching a program the other night about Harold McMillans time in the 50's and respect for the law was very different then. The police were feared.

it's often said that up until the 70's Police and teachers were considered to be at the same social level as doctors - this is now certainly untrue.

i do like it here...honest

Well the Police and Criminal Evidence Act was enacted in 1984, which basically stopped police from battering the **** out of you to get a confession, yeah maybe it was more effective in stopping criminals in a numbers sense, but still it would be a pain if you were getting beat up if you were innocent.

Okay then.

We've got lower income tax compared to Germany, Fance, Italy.

Our literacy rate is 99%. Portugal and China are in the 90-94% band. Other EU countries tend to have similar literacy rates as the UK.

The Economy is stabilising. The credit crunch has hit us, but not as bad due to our strong economy. London has now taken over New York as the financial capital of the world. Companies would rather do business in the UK than the US.

Our military technology is world class. The new Type 45's and Astute Class subs keep rogue nations in check. The comission of the two new Aircraft Carriers will create thousands of jobs.

I haven't got the time to put across my view here at work, but I will leave one point that try looking at is as a whole not just select points. The United Kingdom is still a great place to live in regards to the rest of the world, I can walk down the street in a group of three or more, I can go to a Hospital and get treatment. I can also get food and running hot water. But looking at it as a whole compared to Sweden, Iceland, Luxemburg, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Germany I would not choose the UK.

If your now born in a low income family who happens to reside in a poor part of the country, you now have more chance to get educated, get to a good university and get a good job. This rarely happened 20 years ago, let alone back in our "glorious" British past.

Naw, social mobility's fallen in the last decade. I expect it's higher than it was in the 50s though!

.. And for once let's leave out all the (I'm not british.. i'm scottish/welsh/irish) ;)

I do it the other way around, if someone accuses me of being English, I tell them I'm British, if they still don't get it I tell them I'm Welsh.

i accept your viewpoint but you must accept that many others do chose the UK over those countries.

also as beautiful as i may find some of those listed countries i would easily choose the UK over spain and Italy on the basis of prospects.

The destruction of a sense of community and the slipping standards is the most painfull thing to watch.

In a material sense people now have a very high standard of living, even those classed as poor are not starving by any means. But there is a much greater sense that people are out for themselves these days and much more fearfull of each other.

The slipping standards in the NHS infuriates me. I can remember going into a hospital as a child and they stunk of disinfectant, they were spotless places with strict rules for patients and visitors. Now they are dirty and superbug ridden, full of loud Chav families bringing a McDonalds in for grandma.

I'm pround of the things we used to do well, the standards we set, but sadly these are just becoming memories.

Good post

see the thing is i think the people are great but the inner cities give a terrible impression of our country.

edit: also im looking at a number of reasons posted for not liking our country and can see that they are most likely the same things all countries complain about.
