Finally the plague of mosquitoes is starting to die out so I've managed to get out insect hunting:

C&C much appreciated.

Thank you.

The pictures were taken with a canon 350d & canon twin macro flash, #1&3 were with the canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens, #2&4 with the canon 65mm f2.8 macro.

If you want to get into macro in a big way the EF 65mm f2.8 macro is what you need to be looking at!

The MPE-65? That lens is incredible, 5:1 magnification!

Excellent pictures, I really like number two. The detail is just immense.

well im going to get my first digital slr (got a m8 sellin a 400d cheap to me). so im gonna also look at maybe taking a night college course to learn all the manual settings properly. but yes macro and nature is my type of thing, i can only do so much with my fuji 6500 :)

Cheers! MPE-65 is the one. I've yet to take a keeper at 5:1 however as the FOV is sooooo tiny! :D

Simply beautiful, and I am so jealous of you and that lens. :p

Sounds good! I wouldn't worry to much about taking any photography courses immediately, it's quite easy to pick up how the settings work with a little experimentation and reading around on the web. The only thing a course might be useful for is helping you meet other local people who are interested in photography.

quite a few years back when i was at school i used to take and develop quite a few pics, always been an interest, now i wanna jump into it a bit more :)

T'is a trick....Insects are actually that big in Canada! :p

Seriously, fabulous set, really like no.4.

What is your keep ratio with the MPE-65? I assume it has a rediculously shallow dof?

Now that would be scary!

It's pretty low. At first it was probably about 3%, largely because of the impossible small DOF and also because I was always trying to take pictures at 5:1 where the FOV is so small the slightest wobble will mean you're off the subject. I think now that i'm mostly shooting at about 3.5:1 i'm upto about 10% being keepers.

holy hell! have you thought about selling some of these pictures to biodiversity and ecology books? i had to do those subjects at uni for my degree and none of the pictures were this good!

how close do you physically have to be for these pics? i dont full understand how macro lenses work :s

hmmm, I'm going to the US in November.

yak.h'cir - I've used a MPE-65 but it was indoors and on a tripod etc. Is it worth getting the MPE-65 over the 100mm and extension tubes? (2:1)
How easy can you hand hold over 2:1 ??
