Hill was on decent money in 96 much better than Button in 2009, he was effectively redundant and then got a stay of execution when brawn stepped in. I don't think he got paid much at all in 2009.

He was paid $5m in 2009 (mid table money) and then went to McLaren in 2010 and was paid half what Hamilton was on at the time. More than what he was on, but not quite the earnings of a World Champion.

I believe that was mostly from the WCC point-based bonuses drivers get. IIRC from what was said at the time his actual salary was 6 figures - which is exceptionally low for even an inexperienced F1 driver.
