Buy vs Lease?

That’s because many new car purchases are literally financial suicide

I mean, they're not. They are people exchanging £ for the use of a car for Y years. In exchange for money, they obtain transport. Seems fairly reasonable to me.

Depreciation free cars tend to have costs in other areas. There are very few ways of running a car for nothing.

96% of people buying new cars have finance. If we all stop buying new cars, we will all have to buy E39 5 Series.....oh, wait, I have found heaven!!!!

Makes more sense to buy 12 - 18 months old, almost always. (Almost - not always).

The reasons to buy new are usually good finance incentives.
It’s probably actually easier to buy a new car than a second hand one.

Praying to the depreciation Gods ;)
Even the wealthiest of people don’t like wasting money.

No one likes to lose money, my point is it’s all about perspective. A loss to you is perhaps not to me, a loss to me is chump change to someone with proper wealth. If life was all about the cost of stuff you would walk everywhere in bare feet. We work to live, but also to enjoy surely?

Aren't you all missing the elephant in the room?

If people didn't buy new cars, there wouldn't be any used ones for you to buy either. You only get cheap used cars if people buy loads of new ones. By that metric @SkodaMart should be encouraging everyone to lease and PCP new cars every 3 years, preferably the cars that @SkodaMart would like to drive in the future to ensure a good supply of cheap used cars for @SkodaMart to buy. Please tell me if I am missing something?

Very true it’s relative.
I’ve no problem with people buying whatever car they like.
Leasing PCP etc are tools to allow people who cannot really afford something to buy it anyway.
This can be OK if you have a stable job, good health etc, but that is becoming a rare thing.
Circumstance has made me who I am.
I’ve done what I’ve done to survive on a low wage. (Relative).
I would love to go and buy a new car and be able to write the cost off without a second thought. Sadly that’s not the real world for me.

Yes, SkodaMart has a listing for Citroen Berlingos and not even a 0% lease deal can shift those bad boys :p

PCP was invented as a life line to keep the car industry afloat in a world where people can’t really afford them.
I already think used car prices are crazy. (High)

Green isn't your colour.

They're also tools to allow people who can really afford (by your restricted definition, which others have already challenged) something to buy it without tying up all their cash. Or tools to take advantage of manufacturer subsidies and incentives.

If you can afford one. Pay cash big man.
Trust me you will get a better deal.
Probably not actually these days, cash isn't necessarily king in the world of finance.

Even those who want to buy outright will often look to take out PCP and then pay it off early, because the incentives are better on finance than cash deals.

That’s because without PCP and lease deals many manufacturers would already be out of business.
It’s only delayed the inevitable

Check out carwow.
That’s what I was saying earlier.
You can’t get £5000 off a new berlingo nothing if you PCP or lease one.
So you are already paying £5k too much before you start.
