Buying a Bravia need some help <---noob

^^^^ Hmmmmm. Dubious box of tissues there. Single?

I have to say after testing loads of LCD's and Plasma's it is clear that if you viewing HD material (movies and TV) Plasma is better. However, IMO, LCD is a much better all round package if you game at all (PC or console). I went for a 52X3000 and cannot really fault it.

My budget is from £600-£800, this is not a budget I will spend in a high street retailer of course, I wont come out with anything decent, I will shop for a week to find the best price. Hopefully somthing thats £1k in a retailer I should find for £750 elsewhere.

Why do you rate the LG 37LF66 so poorly?

I think Ive nearly decided on the Sony KDL-40V3000 can any-one put me off this screen last minute?

Because it is an LG, cheap tat in my eyes and PQ is dire.

I will put you off as james has PLASMA PQ > LCD PQ.

I don't your reasoning with regard to budget. I bought my tv from a big department store, got them to pricematch another electronics retailer saving me £400, got a 5yr warranty and got it delivered. You can get the 42 panasonic PX80 for under £700, and with the pricematch, 5yr warranty all from this department store, it really is a no brainer. Why pay for the 'sony' badge on the front of a tv that looks inferior to the plasma, so in essence it's the badge and spec sheet you are paying extra for.

O and james your such a plasma fanboi :p

YES GET A PLASMA

Just checked out the PX80 its not even 1080p?

At 4m you won't be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p on a 42" screen, so what's the point in buying one.

Also, if you click on every other thread in this section relating HDTVs you's find a discussion of how much better it is to have a good 720p over a poor 1080p. The numbers are for marketing and to suck people is, it's the quality of the image that counts.

We really need a sticky on this.

Doesn't make a difference.....As already stated I am returning a V3000 (the best 40" LCD below £800) for a PX80. The fact that the V3000 could display 1080p, and the PX80 couldn't is really irrelevant - It's more the fact that the quility of the picture is far superior in every way :)

O.k guy thats for all your help, now to finish this thread off could you put these on order of your personal preference.

Here they are in no particular order:

1) LG 37LF75 £603 Delivered
2) LG 37LG5000 £610 Delivered
3) SONY KDL 40V3000 £720 Delivered
4) PANASONIC TH-37PX80 £573 plus postage

1) PANASONIC TH-42PX80 £669 delivered
2) PANASONIC TH-37PX80 £573 plus postage
3) SONY KDL 40V3000 £720 Delivered
5) LG 37LF75 £603 Delivered
5) LG 37LG5000 £610 Delivered

Seriously, at 4m viewing distance you need to get a 42" just to make 720p worthwhile. I'm not trying to get at you but I just don't want you to waste money on thechnologies that you can't make full yse of.

I've got a 42" which I watch from 8-9' (2.5-3m) and sometimes even my wife says she wouldn't mind the 50" (hey, the spam is right, they do all want it bigger!). Flat panel TVs may sound big when you look at the numbers but they are far less physically imposing than a CRT - my previous unit was a 28" Trinitiron and the plasma is, overall, much smaller. It will seem large initially, but they shrink very, very quickly.

Please go for the 42".

You can pick up the 42" version on the PX80 for £649 if it is price matched. That will also include free delivery & a 5 year warrenty ;)
You don't need to consider any of the other sets

Is this screen really as good as every-one is making out?
Ive read the reviews and they are very good with a price to match, but its one ugly looking TV (not that that matters), and on paper it isnt as good as other things. Not trying to be negitive I just want to spend my money (-£800) on the best available today

At the moment it's better than the other screens you have listed and it can be picked up for an excellent price. It's not the best TV currently available, but it's certainly the best in this price range.

Wont 1024 x 768 pixels look awful?

Do a search for reviews on the PDP-428XD by Pioneer. It's out of your price range, but it's also a 1024 x 768 and produces the best picture of any screen in the sub £1500 category and is certainly the best 42" currently available.

1024 x 768 can produce some amazing images and 1080p can produce some terrible ones, and vice versa.

Whatever you get join avforums and find out what the best settings for your TV are as the out of the box ones (as used in most stores) will usually be appauling.

As said, I have a Kuro and it made all the 1080p sets (including sony X3000) look very ordinary indeed. A good 720p set like the PX80 really is in a special league of its own at that price. plus with the ability to get delivery thrown in and a 5yr warranty (through a pricematch) it really is a bargain. E-mail for specifics if you want.

P.s. I went through this dilema when choosing tvs myself, and am soo glad it's over !
