Buying a Bravia need some help <---noob

I've just been reading a thread on AVForums which suggests you shouldn't even watch a full foorball match on a new set as it may cause screen burn
Is this people just being over the top careful?

stay WELL away from samsungs

Me and my mate both have the Samsung LE40F86, mine has terrible backlight bleed, i would send it back, except for fear of getting a set so bad it will be like my friends.

His has all sorts of problems, dubbed "humbars" by the AVforums. They look like scart interference, with wavy lines going up the screen, but you get them on HDMI and all inputs. There are other issues that others are reported too. But samsung are useless, they dont have any engineers in the UK to send if you have a problem.

Mate contacted samsung, they sent an independant repair company who knew nothing about the sets, and just replaced the board. This made the problem worse so he complained to samsung again. They sent another engineer who said there was no way he could fix it and that he's seen loads of sets like this, and replacing the set would just make it worse

He wrote a report off to samsung writing it off and my mate is currently getting his money back

Its not just the F86 either, its older brother, the M87 suffered from similar issues with scart interferences, and some people swapping them 5 or 6 times and still not getting a perfect set.

I splurged the best part of 1k on my sat, and no way would i buy samsung again, neither would loads of other samsung owners.

I like LCDs, so for my money id get the new Sony KDL40W4000 due out some time in the next 4 weeis. I suggest you go see the W4000 in the sony shop once released as they are somewhat better at setting them up than the usual DSG retail culprits. Then go see a PX80 in the panasonic shop and make your own mind up :)

£250?! You mean £350  - It does have a very good review on HDTV forums, but too much money for me...:)

Wow a lot more monies. But it is only a review so take it with a big tablespoon of salt.

Dean, when is your new baby arriving ?

The reviw itself is goo, but then again so is the PX80's. They both receive the 'highly reccomended' level. Once you get to this kind of level of Tv the difference, more often than not, are very minute in terms of picture quality.

We're picking it up (and dropping the V3000 off) on Saturday morning so will do a full write up most likely on Sunday night or Monday at some point :)
Very excited!

Lol. My brain doesn't do maths before my morning coffee

I know what you mean....You have to look at it in percentages really. the W4000 is approx 35% more expensive than the PX80 - Is it 35% better? Certainly not!!!

ideally you need to compare it with the PZ80 as the px80 is not 1080p, the W4000 is.

When you take this into account, its not that much more expensive.

its a good time to start learning then. take it from somebody who owns a 40w2000 - im selling it and getting a plasma because im no longer going to put up with the black levels.
That's exactly what I did. Sold my 40w2000 on Ebay and bought a Panny TH-50PZ700 Plasma. The black levels were pretty good on my Sony but they are just better on the Panny; no need to worry about mura or backlight bleed ever again. Plus the extra 10 inches makes all the difference. I guess size does matter after all. ;)

If you want uniform deep blacks Plasma will always be better than LCD. It's the nature of the technology. On LCD the backlight is always on so light must be prevented from getting through to the pixels, whereas Plasma only supplies light to the pixels when it's needed.

A few weeks ago I was asking myself the same question... LCD or Plasma. After a lot of research, viewing of screens and forum posts I decided on a 40V3000 (not because it is a Sony, but because it is the best LCD in its price range) and I have not looked back. After setting it up the black levels are much better than I expected. Everyone, like people in this thread, almost put me off. They are nowhere near as bad as people suggest! In the end though the deciding factors for me was most plasmas I've seen seem look poor close up and I often sit close to my TV. Also I don't want any screen burn issues. Yes I know it's avoidable, but what if I fall asleep with the Sky menu on or something?! Also, the resolution is a bonus as I use it with my PC too.

I guess it depends what exactly you will use the set for and how sensative you are to the issues that both technologies have. For me and LCD was the righ one to go for and I'm glad I did. However, for some a plasma is the clear winner - they do have better blacks. One thing I found through the entire process is simple really but often ignored because of lazyness... don't listen to advise from people on the internet! Go into a shop and test them out for youself. Ask them to connect some sets to a Blu-ray player/PS3 or even a PC/laptop and spend some time playing with the settings and see which works for you. :)

Whatever you go for you will end up with a fantastic TV either way :)

Having seen the new panasonic PZ-80 & PZ85 (1080P Plasmas) in a shop, I think that these are rather good for the money they can be had when you compare them to the pioneer range.

I'm sure I saw the 42" PZ80 for <£900 online.

O.k guy thats for all your help, now to finish this thread off could you put these on order of your personal preference.

Here they are in no particular order:

1) LG 37LF75 £603 Delivered
2) LG 37LG5000 £610 Delivered
3) SONY KDL 40V3000 £720 Delivered
4) PANASONIC TH-37PX80 £573 plus postage

Panasonic TH-37PX80B.

I just spent the last 2 months looking at which TV between 37"-42" to buy. After visiting several shops and comparing, reading many reviews and user reviews, etc, etc. I went for the TH-37PX80B.
I got it for £593 inc 5 year warranty and delivery.

The picture is absolutely stunning and when comparing it alongside others in the shops, you realise that 720p and 1080p really doesn't make barely any noticable difference with a screen this size.
All HD and Bluray movies I have played on it so far look absolutely stunning.
