Buying a Car, hit a problem

Walk away! Is it a Rover by any chance? :p

The fact the dealer is trying to pull out is a good thing, rather than flogging you a shoddy car..

Only 1.5k not huge money.

He is ringing me at lunch, see what he says :(

For 1.5k you could get a pretty decent car, i implore you to walk away from this one. Hell, my old corsa was in better nick than this and it was only worth ~£700 (ok it's a rubbish car, but at least it was in good working order)

Wow you're a bit crackers if you dont mind me saying. Be greatful he was honest, get your money back and make like a sheep and flock off safe in the knowledge you havent just bought an absolute nail

Relentless (as well as others) are right!

Take your money and find one elsewhere - i wouldn't want to buy a car with a suspected head gasket problem.

Look at it this way... you could have bought this and discovered the issues yourself which wouldn't have been any fun - you now have an oportunity to find a car with fewer faults!

Yeh I'm rushing what I say.

Kinda trying to work inbetween lol.

I understand what your saying, I get it. But is there any true way of knowing I'm not going to push money into a paperweight? All cars have problems, at least I'm not having to pay for this work.

Though if you're after 'a car' (rather than specifically an ST220 in Performance Blue with Xexons and Nav etc) I'd be tempted to stick with this garage as the bloke's evidently decent and not wanting to flog you a duff car :).

Thats kinda what I've been trying to say.

Thank god one of us can write efficiently :D

There is this. He could have just stuffed you and then let you pay all the bills.

What is the condition of this - in fact - what is the car in question?

Those being condescending to you regarding your comment on head gasket failure are being somewhat unkind and just looking to belittle you.

HGF can happen for a number of reasons and the fact that its been done may give you some peace of mind - having the belt changed a the same time (if it has one) might be a good idea too.

As you say, you may end up with a car thats had all its big problems repaired or you may end up a car thats carrying a whole raft of parts. I would go to the garage thats doing the repair and ask them "off the record" what they thought of it.

I'd suggest the OP take other posters comments a bit more than with a pinch of salt. While some can be rude and/or annoying at times they generally do give very sound advice on this sort of thing.

Buy a different car from the same bloke, he sounds quite honest to me.

Those being condescending...
More cautionary advice (in my case) than condescending TBH.

I've had experience of a HG repair and the car was never the same - another friend of mine had the same and the car in that case was also less than 100% so it's worth considering that despite a repair happening you may get an effectively 'lame' version of the car you expect.

Of course it's his money and he can do what he likes but he did post on a forum and ask advice.

This is probably decent advice too.

I agree, I wouldn't ask advice if I didn't value it from these forums.

I'm wanting more of a reason than "lol take deposit and run" sort of thing.

Its something worth considering.

And thanks for the comments everyone.

Even those intending to belittle it all adds to the discussion :D

Sorry for those who asked. Its a Golf MKIV. The bodywork and paintwork is absolutely mint. Obviously the mechanical side of things not so much
