Buying a Cisco router for home use

What 800 series where you thinking about? 887VA? The Cisco 887V or VA works with both ADSL2+ and VDSL.

If you where set on using Cisco equipment for home use, id personally go with the 887VA over a 1841, it also a better all in one solution. However, I believe the 1841 doesn't support the new HWIC cards for VDSL so it would require you to use a VDSL modem.

Thanks for the response. The one I was looking at was the 887VA. But then somebody else suggested a new one that is coming out called the 867VAE.

This is exactly what I thought, it would work for everything I need. ADSL2+ now and VDSL in the future. I did also have a look at the 1841 and I think you are right in what you say.

Thanks!

Hi

Not sure if you are still looking for a Cisco887VA. I can supply one for £275 ex vat and delivery. Please let me know if you’re interested. I try to have the best Cisco prices around.

Many Thanks

I've got a lot Cisco equipment at home and it's really not worth it. I was told the same but went and brought equipment anyway. It is nice to have but better off using old equipment like 2950's 1801's etc. just use packet tracer. Good luck with your exams!

I used to have a Cisco 857 running my ADSL and until recently I had an ASA 5505 firewall running as well. Have to say I had great fun setting everything up, but once its up and running you can't really go playing around too much for fear of breaking your connection (and the wife then breaking my head).

As others have suggested, if you want to get your hands on physical kit I would suggest buying some older equipment and setting up a test lab instead. At least that way, when it breaks and you get stuck you can still get access to the internet to find out how to fix it :p
