Buying a PS3 next week, but i have some questions...

Well they havent really, cause nobody knows the answer at the moment. :p

Hopefully we'll have more news Monday when rp2000 recieves his spanky new cable.

People can talk about what they like in here, doesnt phase me in the least, aslong as i have the answer i need by the time i get my PS3 (trying to sell me on the idea of a 360 is a waste of time) then i really dont care. :D

I will let you know on Monday. I only have my Panasonic HDTV and another 19 inch PC monitor to test with, so it will be in no way conclusive. But I am interested to see if it works (and why there is so little info on the web about it  ).

this discussion will never be resolved about opinions until the end of time

PS3 gets my vote, its served me well since release day, however the 360 is still a good machine but its had a lot bad press due to reliabilty and the extras on the ps3 make it a good alround buy

I just think people should take all considerations in to mind, if he wants a games machine - Xbox360, if he wants a media all-rounder - PS3.

Yeah, I'm glad i have both! (luckily my xbox is still alive after last nights escapade)

I would just say to everyone get both! :p

I can see where NokkonWud is coming from, as someone who has both I much prefer the 360 controller, and I find it an odd reason for dismissing the 360 as an option, but that really doesn't matter since Insanity is interested in PS3 exclusives and not interested in 360 exclusives, so there's only one choice. I can easily understand that - if you're a Gran Turismo fan, or Final Fantasy fan (etc) the 360 just isn't going to interest you.

?? Serious matter of opinion! There are tons more exclusives that are out/coming out for PS3 over 360 imo, a few old back catalogue games that arent on the PC doesnt really make it such an l33t games machine incomparison to a media all-rounder. The -op wants a PS3 then wise decision imo.

OP - youll be able to use a HDMI-DVI adapter if your monitor supports DVI-D (digital), but the screen will also have to be HDCP compliant. You wont be able to use HDMI-DVI-VGA as the VGA signal is analogue. You can purchase signal converters but they cost around £45! Component will be fine if your monitor supports it (will also bypass HDCP) but I found that my Dell 2407 could only output 720p, apparantly the component controllers are pants though!

Nokkon, i have taken everything into mind, and again you took me literally when i said i thought about the 360 for 8 or 9 seconds. =/

There is nothing about the 360 that stands out for me, besides being able to hook it up directly thru VGA cables, which isnt a mind changing bonus imho. There's no 360 exclusives that i want, i dont like the control pad - regardless of your opinion about its functionality and how gimmicky you think the sixaxis is, you have to pay a sub to play online (A mistake on MS' part in my opinion) and there's no blu-ray. Although im not buying the console for its blu-ray/media capabilities, it's nice to know it's all there in the PS3 if i decide to give it a go.

@ Nanoman. Is there a component to vga adaptor? And if so, will i be able to force it to use a higher resolution? The whole problem i have with fishbowl tvs is that they're low res and i can see the scanlines or whatever you call them, even when watching tv/dvds, so im sure i'll also see it with a PS3. Which is a shame. :(

Considering MS make a lot of money from their online service it's not, I'd rather pay for PSN to have it like Xbox Live than have it free like PSN.

Why do you not lot the pad? You either haven't used it or you have baby hands. IF you ask people what console for games, the majority will say Xbox360 (as seen in another thread created today). The PS3 has no high quality exclusives other than Uncharted and no-one knows when the other ones are coming, but if you're happy to wait for a while then so be it.

Regardless of how much money they make with Live, i still think they have a cheek charging a fee for it. Yes, they provide a service and have the right to charge a fee, but its not out of MS' financial capabilities to actually give the buyers of their consoles something for free. It doesnt matter how different Live is from PSN, PSN still works and it's free. And now with "Home" on the way, its only gonna improve... and it'll still be free.

I dont like the shape/size/feel of the pad, and i dont like how the sticks are in different areas of the pad. One in the middle, and one off to the side where the D-pad should be... it just doesnt feel right. Im used to having both sticks in the middle.

IF you ask people what console for games, the majority will say Xbox360

Well that's fine for them. They have the right to have that opinion. But you have to realise that their opinion isn't MY OPINION. And seeing im the one that'll be coughing up the cash for it, i'll stick with my own opinion on the matter, thanks. :)

Good for you mate. You know what you want and you know what you like & dislike. Enjoy the PS3 there's plenty of games. Oh and I like to the sixaxis and and no doubt many others do too.

Hey all,

As the thread title says im buying a PS3 next week (whoop whoop :D) which will be my first console since the PS1.

Anywho, im a tad confused about the display options. It seems a bit sad to spend all that cash on the PS3 just to play it on a fishbowl tv that only supports 640x480 or whatever. (Buying a HD/LCD tv isnt an option, as im extremely poor. :p )

So i wanna try and run it thru my PC monitor. Which would give me these options (that im not sure will even work):

- HDMI to DVI adaptor

- HDMI to DVI to VGA adaptor :o

- AV/Composite/Whatever (3 leads - Red, Yellow, White) to VIVO

Which leaves me with a few problems.

- I dont even know if the 40gb version comes with a HDMI cable (will research one that later)

- How do i get around changing what my monitor is plugged into? From pc to ps3 and vise versa. (The back of my PC doesnt have the best access)

- Will i even be able to play at higher resolutions on my monitor than my fishbowl tv?

Regardless of the answers, im still buying one. :D

Thanks for the help!

I know its a bit late, but i Just found this http://www.thegametrain.com/blog/2008/02/playing-high-def-playstation-3-on-vga.html
lists many ways of getting Hidef output onto a VGA monitor, not the cheapest method but looks like it should work.
